Questions re: roundworms!I want to treat ASAP. Help! I have broody hens

Treat the pullets @16 weeks old. It is very important to treat pullets at this age to make sure worms do not damage the egg laying organs.

Worms will die quickly. It is the eggs that are in the poo that you cannot really see that will spread the worms. That is why you treat again in 10 days because the worm medicine does not kill the eggs and you need to kill any that hatch inside the chickens before they can produce more eggs. Breaks the live cycle of the parasite.

Safeguard dosing:
.23 ml per pound per chicken.
for 5 days straight.

Then repeat one dose again in 10 days.
Thank you for the dose, and answering my 100 questions! So I don't have a bathroom scale how do I figure the weight of a chicken? Can we approx. The weight? I think some are small :/

Your Welcome!

Good Morning helpful chicken friends!
I'm feeling that out of the chicken hurdles I've been jumping this Spring/Summer... Spending the early morning sticking a syringe down their throats is not the worst way to spend a morning!
So here is my question regarding dosing my pullets. I double checked their hatch dates, and they are exactly 2 weeks away from 16 wks old. I didn't dose them today. Do you think I should have? OR when I give every one their last dose in 10 days can i dose Vern's babies then? (it would be 4 days early) OR do I wait the 4 extra days, and then dose them? Also will they get the 5 doses wait 10 days, and then one dose again? Is that the routine I should do yearly or am I dosing them extra to really knock the worms down?? I will mark my calendar for the other babies that are running around now to be wormed @ 16 weeks. I will for sure worm everyone/ Poop tests from now forward!

I am getting more confident with the syringe medicating. Some chooks are easier than others, and I was surprised that my roosters were the easiest of all! I just went slow, and let the ones who shook their head the worst drink it in small amounts from the syringe.

I guessed weights. While picking up the hens some were significantly lighter than others. I dosed for 3lbs on my smaller hens up to 6lbs on the heavier ones. I dosed my roosters for 7lbs, and my big boy for 8lbs. Can I over dose them? I definitely guessed on the light side I think, but they all feel like they weigh nothing to me! I woke up early, and just took them off the roost one at a time, burrito wrapped them, and dosed one by one. It went fairly smooth.

I will continue this through the weekend. If I should dose the pullets now I will. If I should up their weight guesses too I will. No giant piles of worms on the poop board this morning. If I didn't use a poop board I could see this being even easier to let go unnoticed. I had been telling my husband that they were acting like they weren't eating enough this past few weeks (I had read that could lead to runny poo). I had been feeding them so much, and going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. Like I mentioned in my OP, sniffing chicken breath, checking crops in the AM, butt checks, Extra food....
I'm so grateful I'm not burying them, and that it seems they will be OK once they get through the treatment. Are there any negative side effects I should watch out for? Also I don't think I aspirated any of them, but what should I be aware of just in case?

Good Morning,
Second dosing today. They knew what was coming this time, and no one wanted to cooperate. I got it done, it just took longer.

I marked my calendar for dosing the pullets, and chicks for 16 weeks, but am still unclear if the regular treatment is 5 doses, and one in 10 days? Or is that extra because i'm trying to treat an issue? Or for pullets do I just give them one dose to get them treated?

Moving forward for annual treatments can i dose in the water, and just leave it or is putting in their mouths really the most efficient way? Also If you all do poop tests, and they come back clear do you skip the annual worming? Only treating when they come back positive for worms?

IF a chicken did aspirate, would I know it? I've read they will gurgle, but is it easy to miss or very clear?

Does this medicine make them poop more? I still haven't seen any more worms. Will they come out? I have read that they do, but not seen more. The amount of poop everywhere is remarkable. I'm going to try, and clean the yard up today. How will I know it worked? Will their poos just become more solid again? The chooks with watery poos are really watery. They are moulting too.

Finally Eggs. I have been reading, and seem to be getting a mixed message. I realize i'm using an medicine that says it's for goats. I have read in UK however it is used in chickens. Are the eggs safe to eat? should we chuck them? feed them to the dogs? I haven't sold any since worms were discovered. Should I prepare myself to find worms in the eggs? we collected what was in the coop yesterday, but haven't done anything with them yet.

Sorry I realize now that I've written two essays in two day, and that's a lot of questions! This forum is the best resource I have right now!
Thank you in advance.

When you are giving the medication aim for the very right or left side of the mouth. The trachea is in the middle of the mouth and you dont want to get anything in there.Do a few drops at a time. Immediately stop giving the medication if they start panting. Here are some pictures.Do not eat the eggs.I believe you can eat them two weeks after last dose.I would think they would be pooping a lot as the safeguard is working to get rid of roundworms from there body.I would not mix it in water. You want a full strong dose.I do not worm my chickens unless they have it.Instead of worming regularly you can have a fecal flotation done once a year to test for worms.I also wanted to add that you should probably buy a scale.Safeguard can be dangerous when overdosed and useless when under-dosed.

Thank you for the reply! Those picture were the ones I was referencing too. I did not have panting so that's good. Do you worm your pulleys the same way?
I was hoping the extra poop was just the wormer working. I'm worried now though that ive been guessing. I would hate to have this all be useless, but would feel even worse if I were to hurt anyone by guessing the dose. I will run to town tonight and get a scale... Do you think I may have done damage by guessing?
