Questions re: roundworms!I want to treat ASAP. Help! I have broody hens

O girl..I'm sorry I didn't notice this sooner.

Electrolytes are fine for the chicks too.
Many people actually offer them to chicks for a little pick me up when they are first hatched.

So no blood ...right?

She probably just got scared real good.
I'd leave her be.....she will be fine.

I'm going to say that she and the babies got lucky this time.
What ever came after her will be back so you are going to need to put her and the babies in a secure place for a while until you can figure out what came to is it.
I personally would not trust a rooster to keep a predator away.

I wouldn't worry about the sound she was making...as long as she is eating and drinking she will be ok.

I'm really busy right now with prepping for this stupid hurricane that will be hitting tonight.

I'll try to check back in with you later this evening.
I know you get back to me when you can. My husband appreciates that I have found you for chicken support too!
She is eatting as of today, but has been drinking plenty of water, and being very cautious. I left her and the babies locked up tight yesterday. she def. Got mauled by something. We are working on the coop run extention today. I think another hen got caught up in whatever happened too. She is limping some, but the both just seem really shook up. No blood to be found. I looked and looked, and then woke up early and looked again! The noise she was making scared me so much I was sure there had to be wounds.
I will be on the watch for figuring out what it is that got them
That's 2 hens shook up but with me, and two babies gone! I don't think it was our normal fox.
I checked popcorn foot and soaked last night, and the swelling in her toe is gone. It feels squishy and empty now. I am keeping it covered still just to keep it clean. The one on the pad of her foot is still pretty big. The wounds look pink and healing. No black scab. With your guidance I think I am going to get everyone set up and back to healthier than they've ever been!

Please take care of yourself, and critters while you weather the storm! Ill be waiting to hear from you when its passed.

I'm so glad Popcorn's foot is all better.

You did good "fixing her up"!!!
Get busy building working out that coop/run...get er done girl!

Hello!!! :wee
I'm still going chicken crazy here in VT!
Hubby is taking a full time class this fall so I have been pulled in a few extra directions lately, but the coop extension/roo pad is still in the works. We are aiming to make real progress on it this weekend.

Our recent random predator (which wasn't the normal fox) ended up being our neighbors new dog. I think that might also be what happened to my gold laced wyndotte :( The dog came tearing into the yard right down our front walkway when we were outside with the birds. The owner came to get him immediately, but I let him know that I think his dog was getting my chickens... We haven't had any other issues since then with the dog. Not something that we have had to worry about before, but hopefully he knows now that his dog isn't an off leash kind of dog!

Popcorns foot seems totally healed!! She seems in better spirits. I feel like her poops are still watery though.

Abe the main roo is now separated with my other two roos in the temp pen. They are all moulting, and the hens are just overall looking rough. Abrahams respectful encounters were still breaking feathers. I wanted to give all the girls a break.

Here are my newest chicken puzzles :
I have noticed someone is laying softer shelled eggs then the others (I have found one that was legit soft). All the eggs started to toughen back up after the worm fiasco. I figured it was due to them getting more nutrition again, and I have been offering the oyster shell in a dish. In addition They are now all of a sudden laying eggs in random places?! Not everyone just a few. Like the middle of the yard, the coop, and in the run. Today there was one dropped onto the poop board. Like it fell out or something? Is it the full moon?!

I spotted a mite yesterday, during butt checks! Then found another today. Heading to town tomorrow to get supplies to wage war! I am NOT going into this winter with even a hint of bugs in that coop! Chicken butts are getting sprayed!

Whew! I think thats everything. My head is spinning that I've survived this summer (and so many of my chickens did)! Did you get a lot of the rain from the Hurricane where you are? How many chickens do you manage to keep healthy, and happy at a time?! Also :) Why type of bedding do you use? :) I remember you said you use Deep litter method.

Whew you stay busy!
I'm so glad Pop's feels are better!!! :thumbsup
Hopefully the neighbor keeps his dog in his yard from now on, usually a nice convo let's them know that you are serious.

It flooded bad here..it did not get into my house so I'm happy!
Everything is still a mess..I'm happy that school will start back up next week...this 2 plus weeks of having the kids home is....work!

My coop and run are open...not closed in like a house.
My coop part does not have bedding..just laminate flooring that I scrap off.
Poop boards get cleaned daily.

Run and the bottom ground level of the coop are deep litter on dirt floor.
I use hay and yard "stuff"...leafs, grass clippings, and I dump the pine shavings out of the nest boxes pretty regularly to add to the deep litter.

Get the permethrin spray asap.
Treat the coop too!

It's rainy here today so i'm taking some time to update!
I feel like I should maybe post this in my Vern thread where the Mite chaos all began! I realize I started this thread with worms! Ick its crazy to look back at how nuts it's been. I have learned so much!!

I waged war on the mites! I re investigated all My options, and went with Spinosad again. Since i really saw knock the mites down, and I was indeed infested by this Spring.
I looked into Permethrin, Pyrithren, and Spinosad. I compared all the pros, and cons.
Our yard drains directly down into a stream (hence drainage, and a lot of yard work happening this year), but I just don't think Permethrin is the way for me to go right now... Permethrin: Basically a synthetic pyrethren; which is why I looked into it more deeply...It last longer in the environment then Pyrethren. Which I get is GREAT for bug extermination, and why its effects last so long, but also means it doesn't break down in the sun as fast, and we are close to the water. It is brook with native trout, and we have to be cautious of that.
This made me narrow my search back to Pyrithren vs. Spinosad. Pyrithren breaks down faster in the enviornment, but it seems that it has to come in contact with the insect. I also read that it mostly stuns the insect, and when used with another method (mostly neem) the mites die. My experience with neem is that it knocks populations back But does not eradicate! (Neem was my go to in the Spring, and it obviously wasn't tough enough)
Spinosad for the win.

Mistakes that I avoided last time: Not treating the Birds (garlic isn't treatment), and only the coop for weeks (maybe months)!

Here is what I did! : Gutted, and broke down the coop. Removed all next boxes, and ramps, poop boards etc. Removed all bedding. Scrubbed all boards, boxes, and ramps with hot water, brush, and peppermint soap. Sun dried, and then coated with spinosad.
Inside the coop: I shop vac clean. Then I Torched all the roosts (especially underneath), and corners in the coop. Then I scrubbed inside roosts, floor, and walls with peppermint castile soap, and hosed out the coop. I let it all air dry, and reassembled the coop.

The birds: Were all individually treated as they loaded up to roost at night. Adult birds all got tooshy sprayed well, and under their wings. Pullets got under their wings sprayed. I focused on making sure that the spray made contact with skin.
I have not seen a single mite since treatment. On a bird butt or in the coop. I will treat again with Spinosad, and will be giving one more full cleaning before we button up for winter!

I know that was a long detailed update, but maybe it will help someone someday. The spinosad concentrate NEEDS to be strong enough to work also.
I will be vigilant with my bug inspections untill we get a hard frost here.

Popcorns poop remains the same. I had one more egg on a poop board in the morning, and its shell is just not as hard as everyone elses... Every adult bird is moulting right now.
Roos are still separated, and the girls are starting to get some of their feathers back. I The boys are going to stay seperate until everyone is done moulting.
Zelda my GLW has decided to go broody again. The same day the coop got cleaned out! I gave her ceramic eggs to sit on. All the faverolles that hatched this year were roosters! I hope your yard is drying out?

Thanks for the update!
If not in the sun, spinosad persists for a month so the coop should be sprayed again then. You do not need to break it down though.

Mites are bad news! You likely need to give them vitamins and I would suggest giving them Big Ole Bird from southland organics every two weeks.

Above link is an example. You may be able to find it for less somewhere else.
