Quick!! How loud is a guinea hen compared to a small (like OEGB) bantam roo?

There ya go. Peeps answered your question. Ya do get used to the racket and even come to enjoy it.....sometimes, LOL. Guineas don't eat much if they free range and they eat EVERY kind of insect, incuding mice and small snakes. I got mine for tick control, with the added bonus of scorpions, moths, yellow jackets, etc. What a pleasure that is. The ones I had in FL also worked good on flies and mosquitoes. They are worth every bit of racket they produce. besides, they are the funniest most entertaining critters you can have. Never mind that it takes 6 of them to make one brain, I love'm anyway.......Pop

It's interresting how you get used to the noise and notice when the sound changes. When a hawk threatens, the clatter is mind boggling and urgent, but when a hen is laying, it's completely different, kinda subdued, amost like love noises and much quieter. A funny thing I read sometime back, dunno if it works, but interresting, a fellow was trying to locate a nest. He used a turkey call and made a few chirps. The guinea answered back and he found the nest. Maybe I'll try that this year. Any nest I don't find quickly is destroyed by predators. The joys of living in the woods.......Pop

Thanks, that was quick, indeed. I did listen to them on the videos on You tube, and the females didn't seem too loud, but then, it may be my speakers. When their calls echo through the valley, is it still not too loud? Just two hens?

I have a couple Ameraucanas who have get terribly loud complaining when they're broody and some other hen sits on their eggs to lay. They run out of the coop wailing , which is way-way- waay louder than all my roosters crowing.

Can guinea hens be worse?

LOL... its Guinea Fowl.

Hens are the girls and Cocks are the boys. And Mine even buckwheat at NIGHT. Its just one.... Hey it might be the one that is suspect is a hen but she never says ANYTHING. Not even the Chi Chi Chi alarm call. Maybe she is the one Buck wheating all night long.

Thanks, Pop, Peeps, & Tinybarnfarm, for all the info on guinea sounds. I've got 14 eggs I just set this morning, and I hope the neighbors don't notice. This upcoming summer of the guineas' adolescence will be full of loud motorcycles, four-wheelers, cars booming stereos as they drive by, and nightly raccoon raids on the squirrel & bird nests, so they won't be noticed too much. I lan to lend them out to neighbors for their tick problems too.

So, would just two guinea fowl hens still be really loud? What about one male and one female? Would they stay quiet if its just 2?

Guineas are not quiet birds, period. Guineas have been coined as "barnyard watchdogs" for their alertness and alarm call qualities. They are constantly watchful, on alert and super quick to sound the alarm (especially up until they are at least 1 yr old). If noise is an issue for you/your area... I do not suggest getting Guineas.

Also, since they are flock birds, 2 Guineas... be it a breeding pair or 2 Guinea Hens generally would not be as happy as they would be if they were in a flock of 10-15 Guineas.

Oh boy. I'm starting to get worried. I'm getting 5 guinea chicks tomorrow (the ticks this year are HORRIBLE) and I'm starting to worry about the noise. I have 3.5 acres, and neighbors with chickens, goats, and one with a pack of dogs who bark at every thing that moves. Oh, and one neighbor who has a rock band that practices in his garage. None of their noise bothers me at all. I can kind of hear it, but not really. Are my guineas going to be so loud that they're going to make me hated?????
