Are Sussex eggs small? I have four nine-month old SS pullets, and their eggs haven't gotten much bigger than when they began to lay. They're still size-small.

Is this what I'm stuck with? Or can I look forward to them growing larger over the next few months?

For comparison, my Cochin and Wyandottes, EE and Brahma hens all lay large eggs of the same approximate size, and the SS eggs are much smaller.

I don't know yet, I just got two this spring. I was thinking they laid on the large side of medium. At least that's what I thought I read.

I have 5 Speckled Sussex, three 2 year old hens from a breeder and two 1 year hens that are hatchery stock. They have all started out laying medium size eggs for quite sometime. The 2 year old hens are my largest birds and are laying bigger than medium to large eggs. The little hatchery hens are still laying mediums but they are laying very well. At the other end of the spectrum I have a tiny flighty EE hen, smallest and lowest in the pecking order of the flock. She lays the largest eggs and keeps right up with the BA's in number of eggs. While I appreciate her contributions to breakfast the big laid back Sussex are much easier to live with.

Thank you for the replies. I love my four SS, and they're regular layers, but I guess I'm just spoiled by the huge eggs the rest of the flock lays.

I have noticed that as a hen grows larger, so sometimes do her eggs, and two of my SS are very petite little critters.

I also have three EEs and gosh almighty, their eggs are sometimes so huge I can't get the lid to close on the egg carton!

I used to have 2 speckled sussex hens that were very sweet girls and laid pretty regularly. Unfortuntately, their eggs never made it past the 'medium' sized stage. I've also read in hatchery catalogs that they tend to lay medium sized eggs, but it probably depends on the lines your girl comes from.
