On craigslist for my area someone has listed "5 Buff Orphington and 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets, about 6 weeks old, nicely feathered out and healthy". At 6wks, would I be able to know for sure I am getting pullets and not a bunch of castoff roos???
My feed store STILL doesn't have pullets in and I am getting VERY impatient!!

oh yeah...you should be able to tell by looking at their combs.

I would think that you would be able too. You would definetly have a better idea at 6 weeks than you would buying day olds!! Have you searched for "6 week old Buff Orphington Rooster" and do the same for the SLW and you might find some pictures on here of them at that age you could print us and use as a reference!!

Good Luck!!

at 6 weeks the boys should have red combs.. the girls should still be smaller and pinkish ... not RED

awesome thanks. It has been 20yrs (at least

)since I had chickens, so I was not really sure if their gender could be determined for sure at that age. Sorry if it was a dumb question. Think I might call about the SLW

Good luck... and PS... your dog in your avatar is just perfect. I can tell just by that look on his/her face that it's a great dog... I want it!

Thanks! He IS a great dog! Cats and kids love him and he adores them. He will be 2 in May and is 106lbs. I love coming home to someone who thinks the earth settles back onto its axis just because I have arrived. hehehe
