Quick Rabbit Meat question

Quote:
The older rabbit would be a good canditate for my cream of mushroom soup concoction IMHO. I wouldn't try to fry it. I don't think resting it longer would make much of a difference, but I am not an expert on the subject. Been a few years since I raised rabbits.

Thank you! This was a first for me, so I'm pleased it went as well as it did. Can't pass up two weeks worth of meals for me and the dog for $10.

I thought about trying to hang them somewhere, but I really don't have a good place to do it. I don't trust the bathroom showerhead not to pop off with me pulling, the doors all have carpet under them, and the deck is in full view of the neighbors and their kids who wouldn't understand the crazy lady brutally slaughtering and tearing apart helpless bunnies.

Ok. I'm done. *L*

Still trying to get hold of the guy with the roosters. I'm looking forward to some Coq au Vin, pot pies, chicken salad, and oh so delicious rich stock for my famous pumpkin soup!

They aren't too bad here in Washington either. We even have all the money for a down payment and were going to start looking around now. The problem is my Fiancée and I are both made victims of the economy this year and we're unemployed. No mortgage for us!

aw heck, if your already unemployed anyway, buy a farm! sell chickens and eggs!!! don't be the victim of anything, be the one who seizes the opportunity for change . . .

When I was a young teen I raised rabbits for their meat. I could dress them out like a pro. I would cut the head off, skin them, gut them and all in a fast efficient manner. The only part I COULD NOT DO was kill them. It's not that I didn't want to it is that I just could not do it. My Dad would kill them and hand them off to me. I am 55 years old now and I still can't do it. I wish I could cause I love rabbit meat.
Good luck

I think a family in monroe/snohomish was in the paper not too long ago. Didn't read it all so could be totally off, just saw the front page of the article and something about how they rented their farm and lived in a yurt on it for part of the year to farm it, and after 5 years, they got gov't aid and bought the farm they were renting with a minimal down payment.

There's a little device they sell called a "rabbit wringer" that is used to break the rabbit's neck. I haven't used it personally but am strongly considering getting one to try it out. I love eating rabbits but am a bit squimmish at having to kill them. As for cooking them, my husband's favorite dish with rabbit is Rabbit Pot Pie. Prepare it the same way that you would for Chicken Pot Pie. I use the recipe in my Betty Crocker's Cookbook.

grambysfarm: where do I look for the "rabbit wringer".

I have a problem with ducks, I just don't have 3 hands. DH doesn't like to do the killing so I am thinking of giving up on the Muscovies, but since I've had them haven't had many snakes. I'd rather have the ducks.

Actually my hands are getting weaker, had trouble with a BR this morning. Anymore, I need to stick with the light weights.

Ibicella: Good going on the rabbits. Good luck on getting onto a farm by renting or buying. Maybe you could go with a rent to own situation. Check with your bank on that one.

Here's a quick recipe for the older one from Outdoor Tables and Tales, its a collection from outdoor writers.

No Peek Rabbit
1 rabbit, cut in serving size peices
salt and pepper to taste
1 Cup smoke - flavores barbeque sauce (or your favorite)
Season rabbit poeces with the salt and pepper. Place in slow-cooker and pour a small amount of barbequessauce on each piece. Do not add water. Cook, covered, at low setting for 8-10 hours. No Peeking, don't let the steam out.

I found the rabbit wringer. Just might be what I need or something like it.

Here's a video of the Rabbit Wringer

Visit the website, and they also have the "Rabbit Zinger" which delivers a bolt through the head. Looks pretty nifty too!

You guys are just too tempting! I'll talk to my fiancee about things. We've got so much to get done first. I'm going back to school on Monday for the next nine months, and he's got to move up from California.

Ultimately, I think we're leaning towards buying land and building an underground home. We're both into survivalism and want to live off the grid as much as possible. So maybe no mortgage at all!

Hee, maybe I could make a "warren" hutch for our future buns!
