OK, so here are my 2, 3 week old supposedly Roman's. The male is tufted and his feathers are coming in white. But the female is not tufted (unless it will come in later) and her feathers are coming in gray or brownish. This picture may not be good enough but what does anyone think? The were ordered from Ideal and supposed to be tufted romans... jennifer

If they are tufted romans, they should be all white and each should have a tuft. The tuft in geese does not work the same way as a crest in ducks. I'd say the other one is an american buff, that's what it looks like in the pic. It seems Ideal is messing up a lot on their orders this year

Yes, I was kind of thinking that she was a Buff, that would be the color I would describe her as, if that makes sense....hum, looks like i'll have to do research on another kind.. I called Ideal and they said that it is possible to have mixed the order although they were supposed to be roman's. She is definitely not a roman. jennifer

I think she/he looks like a Buff. I just got three girls RT's from Ideal... Now, I'll be holding my breath until they feather out. I can 't believe they messed up your order. Are they going to make it right? The last time I looked at their site...I think it said they're out of RT's for the season. It seems like they're out of a lot of things...really early.

I think you'll like your buff...are we sure it's a female?

OP - sorry I got distracted over Jennifer's mixed up order!


I have several Roman Tufted adults and a pair of Sebastapols as well as some new babies of each breed. I think both of these breeds are really quiet. In the past I've had Brown Chinese and they were much nosier than either of these two breeds. My neighbors have Embdens and their immediate neighbors on both the right, left and behind them complain about the Embdens a lot. There's even a lawsuite pending over the entire situation - sad.

I've had a friend tell me that the Buffs are very similar to RT's in their personalities - I don't know, I've never kept Buffs but would like to some day. Good Luck - hope you find a breed that you enjoy and love as much as I love the RT's & Sebbies.

You know, it's funny, cause when I called Ideal, she acted like there was no segregation of geese - I don't know, like it's totally possible to have the wrong kind even if they were supposed to be Roman's. Sounds like she is used to the mixed up orders. I really need a job, maybe I'll go to Cameron, TX and help them straighten out the situation;-). Anyway, they are both very sweet, the Roman boy (I think), is not as shy as the girl (I think), so no I really don't know their sexes but the roman is MUCH bigger. JoJo, are yours already tufted? My RT was that way when I got him at 3 days, but she? never was, hence the situation. I certainly hope she is a she. So for you pros, do the males always get aggressive or obstinate? He's sooo sweet now.
BTW, Ideal asked if I was ok with e'thing, like what did I want them to do, and I'm happy so, all is well. I'll keep you all posted on what she turns out to be... interesting!! jennifer

Yes, they came very 'tufted' right from the start. The three girls (I hope) that they just sent are 4-5 days old now and all have good tufts on their sweet little heads...I sure do hope they are purebred Romans. They look similar to what my others looked like as babies. Keeping my fingers crossed! My Roman ganders have never been as agressive as my China ganders were. They would chase and bite everyone...including me. I can't tell you the number of times I had to defend myself against my worst offender. He was three when I found new homes for all of them. They now live with an older man that keeps them in a large pen with a pool. I like my geese to free range as much as possible - these guys do really well. I lock them up each eve. to keep them safe - I just love them.

I'm sorry, I can't hear anything without pictures to complete the 'picture'. I need photos! also, if they already have tufts, I think you are safe. Also, do geese need to always have solid poops? Strange I know but sometimes it is really watery... are they ok? jennifer

I know...they are really cute. I need to post pics...I'll make an effort...maybe this weekend. Their droppings can be very watery. I'm sure they're fine...they drink massive amounts of water.
