Quiet Roosters

Interesting input. Do you think older roosters will have a quieter crow? What about very small roosters, do they (generally speaking) have quieter crows than bigger roosters?

My Sumatra Roo was pretty quiet before he went to the farm. He had a soft lovely crow and since there were no other rooster he did not crow often.

Just remember that each rooster is different, even within a breed so you really never know how loud they will be.

It is my understanding that if there is only one rooster, then there is less likelihood of constant crowing because there is less competition and no one's answering back.

My rooster is alone and doesn't crow frequently, whereas my son's farm has competing roosters and it's a noise-fest all day long. And although my roo doesn't crow very much (knock wood), he is an excellent leader/protector for the gals.

Maybe consider a young rooster who isn't crowing yet and see what happens.

I have a Barred Rock Bantam Cochin rooster and he has crowed ONCE in all his 9 months. He has a great temper, talks more than the hens do. He is with two other roosters that crow all day and yet still he doesnt crow. Other people have said the same thing, something with barred rocks, they dont crow as much.

I have a brown leg rooster.
He seldom crows. He is the only rooster in the hen house so he king. Leg horns are not a heavy When he does crow, it is not too loud.
I was given a game cock rooster and he crows all morning. I gave him to my sister and he seldom crows. I am not sure but I agree with some of the others. One rooster equals limited crowing.

Unfortunately, the 'small rooster' and 'alone' thing doesn't always work.
My friend had a little silver laced sebright, and he crowed SO loud and SO much, it was insane. And he was the only chicken (besides his single cochin hen companion) within a mile.

I had a silver sebright as well and if I have read correctly the males of the breed are notorious for being loud, insistent and and flighty, which he was. I seem to remember them being called the "pit bulls" of the bantam world (whatever that means?). I also have little Modern Game Bantam Roo and he is sweet and quiet. I am sure he would crow more often if Champ was still in the city with us (Champ went to a friends farm), but he is so gentle and friendly.
