Quiet, sweet tempered chicken breeds

Silkies are generally docile and low volume but, not considered to be good layers. They are a kids favorite though.

Yes. I had a black silkie rooster once that you could pick him up or even let a kid pick it up. I had a bad experience raising baby black silkies. I was a beginner and black silkies are fragile. They died from getting wet. My other chicken breeds made it just fine. I can’t remember what happened exactly but they all died at the same time. It was very disappointing but I agree that they are a very gentle breed. They may be the best as pets but they aren’t fast or tough. They wouldn’t stand a chance in extreme cold, extreme hot, a predator attack or (my biggest fear) a heavy rain. They require too much attention. I couldn’t recommend it unless it was somebody who wanted a house chicken that wears those little diapers. Honestly, I’m not sure how that breed has survived.

I think sexinks are the bes for beginners.

I agree. I had some Red Stars a few years ago. They would walk up to our back porch and try to get into the house. Sometimes they succeeded. They lay a lot of eggs, they are quite hardy, and I found them to be friendly toward humans.

White leghorns are an extremely easy chicken to raise as well but certainly the opposite of friendly. They run for cover every time they hear or see something. You will never gain the trust of a white leghorn but they lay like machines and are very tough. Since this thread is about mild tempered chickens I guess the leghorns are out of the running.

This is my second time purchasing Red Stars. This time I was worried because they were so flighty but after about 10 weeks I have a Red Star that is so friendly you can pick her up and bring her into the house to hang out for a few hours. She even puts up with my obnoxious dogs. I love Red Stars.

Too cute! We have a little bantam girl that comes in for about an hour every couple days for an eye cleaning and she loves to run around on the couch. 😂
