thanks @black_cat --- sadly it will cost a fortune more, but the only thing I seem to be able to find near me with the correct texture. Was it a pretty good mix on the particle size? Did it have to much dusty/fine particles?

Use concrete sand. Any stone yard will have it. It’s the same thing they use under patio pavers. As a mix of smalll pebbles and coarse sand. Chooks can use it as grit.

Ah, I think that some stone yards I looked at for river sand had that, I will check it out

Also, newbie here, and I keep seeing people say "chooks" - is that just slang for chickens or something specific?
