Quitting smoking- need help

Good job!! I am a smoker and need to quit.. The whole house here smokes and we are all horrible enablers.. It's bad. I need to quit for my Mom's sake though because she cannot handle smoking with her lungs and such. I will be joining the QUIT side soon! Just need one more beforehand, like that quick last fix before rehab.

Gum, peppermints, anything to keep your mouth busy. That's what I hear anyhow. Good luck!!

My dad was in the army overseas during the korean war.... he said you couldn't even take a break, unless you smoked. So he started smoking! Luckily he quit!

One of the things I would suggest, is that you really take a good look at your diet. I've heard alot of people (women esp) started smoking again cause they gained weight when they quit. Modify your diet so you're munching on the good things rather than junk food etc. And excersize... keep your mind and body busy and try to avoid the triggers!

How exciting for all you quitters!!! I quit smoking 6 weeks ago Tuesday. It gets easier every day. Stick with it!! I just kept saying to myself, "I will not let cigarettes control my life any longer!" Congrats everyone!!

What got me motivated was a friend of mine telling me how he just quit cold turkey. Just decided he was sick of it, and didn't want to do it anymore, so he stopped. I told him that I wish I had that kind of willpower, and strength to just quit like that, and his answer to me was "Stop being a baby". LOL!! I know it sounds crazy, but everytime I have a craving, that rings through my head "Stop being a baby" and it actually helps!!

It's not an easy thing to do, but so worth it. I quit cold turkey 36 years ago on the day that we moved into the house we had just built. I went from 2 packs a day to none. Just think of all the money you'll save just by not buying them anymore.....not to mention what the potential health costs you could very well save down the road. There are still times when I think a smoke would be nice, but I know that if I smoked one, I'd be right back to smoking all the time. You just have to keep telling yourself it will get easier. Something I didn't do but later thought might be a good motivation is keep track of the times you would have lit up.....when you would have smoked a pack put that money in a jar.....with what they cost now days it would add up pretty fast.

Hang in there!

10 years plus since I quit. The hardest part for me was at first and it was the habit. The smoke after dinner or sitting out back relaxing at the end of the day was the worst. I hated it but I had to quit sitting out for awhile and get busy doing something after dinner.

On a good note wait until your taste buds and sense of smell come back, I had no idea how much smoking ruined that.

You are on the downhill side when a smoker comes near you (not even smoking) smelling like an ashtray and you feel the urge to move away and get upwind.

You have it beat then!

You can do it, don't give up no matter what.

Just found this post and thought I would see how all you quitters are doing. Today is day 12 for me. I have smoked about a pack a day for around 25 years and have tried to quit several times with several methods. This time I wore a patch for 2 weeks then went cold turkey. I am doing better with no crutch then I did with the patches.

I can do it this time. I hate everything about smoking! To date I have saved approximately $60.00! Hmmm, I think it is time to visit the auction section! lol. Great, now I see my chicken addiction really getting out of hand!

I think there are on line support groups for smoking cessation. I know that my son in law used one for support when he was quitting dip. I have quit drinking and I have quit chewing tobacco. Neither was eady, and both are ongoing processes, but quitting chewing was more difficult for me than quitting drinking. For me nicotine is more addictive than alcohol. It's hard, but it can be done. You may have to stay away from your Mom's for a while. It is still difficult for me when I see someone pull a bag of chew out of their back pocket. Even after 3 years and 2 months I want to grab it from them and stuff it into my mouth. We are all smart enough to know that tobacco in it's many forms KILLS. Good luck. One key part in quitting any addiction is to surround yourself with supportive people. Your husband needs to get on board. Good luck. You can do this.
