Oh kate, I am so sorry to hear this... I know what jerk drivers they have down in AL. I almost got in accidents all the time because I drove a tiny little car and some people have too much pride and just can't let a little car by. It was probably some college dude in his big ol' truck or SUV who was talking on his phone and either didn't notice (though I doubt that, Gert was majestic and hard not to notice!), or was too scared to stop. Karma will come back around to whoever hit Gert. He was very lucky to have you as his momma/slave

for 11 years! You hang in there, you know you love your ducks and take very good care of them. Hugs! If I still lived in bama I would visit!

Would he have had such a long happy life cooped up safe away from a road? Sure we can lock them up to keep them safe- but they all have to leave us sometime- somehow. He lived his life free to wander... A good life for a duck. So sorry for you loss in such a tragic and needless way.

I live on a dead end road. Ive even watched the guy across the street coming home inhis truck and swerve to try and hit the canada geese. Gertrude was smart and Never stood in the road like my stinkin geese do. He either fly from point A to point B or followed the girls acoss the street, nipping them in the tail if they tried to stop. He was smart for an old guy, I guess thats how he lived so long. I dont know what today is going to be like. I have two hens on a nest somewhere so the only ones coming for food will be the geese and which ever of the kids that feel like coming.

My heart goes out to you.... I will never understand why some people drive and hit something/somebody/some animal - they should be banned from driving " Driving Without Due Care And Attention" maybe doesn't apply when one of our ducks/chickens/geese are run over by some idiot who shouldn't have a licence ( and probably doesn't)..... I know it doesn't help your grief but I am thinking of you at this difficult time - he was one very handsome guy... silly question perhaps but why did you name him Gertrude?..... normally Gertrude is a female name... well, as far as I know... he was one magnificant guy!

I know exactly what you're talking about. I wish i could put a sign in my yard letting them know that these are my kids they are killing not some stupid animal that they see everyday. Maybe then someone would come fess up and take responsibility.
