My heart really goes out to you, I can tell that you really loved those birds. When I first read your thread I was heartbroken for you but as time has gone by I am getting more and more ticked at your predator!

I can tell from your description that you did your part on providing them with a secure run. Unfortunately there are predators (Black Bear and Mt. Lion) in your part of the country that will get to them not matter what if they are determined enough.

I just hope you plant that stinking predator (I still think it was a Mountain Lion) in the ground!!!! Once again, please be careful. I think you are dealing with a predator that given a chance, could do as much harm to you as you to it.

Hope you get some comfort in knowing that all of your BYC friends are with you in spirit.

It's 2:17am and I'm awake because every time I start dropping off I think I hear something. I found out today our school librarian's father's Husky was attacked by coyotes Saturday night and another friend's goats were completely decimated Sunday night by coyotes. With the lack of rain I'm afraid the predators are coming out of the mountains looking for food and water.

Oh sooo sorry Writerofwords. I haven't ever had to survive a catastrophic loss like that.... I have lost em two at a time at the most... I am truely devasted for you.... Lots of hugs.... If you want some eggs shipped to you.. Time for a cinderblock coop.

From another fellow New Mexican....take care and let us know how we might help...want some more chickens....a shotgun? Anything at all, just say the word. We've been lucky, no losses but have dogs, donkeys and fences plus coop fairly close to the house although that does not deter most predators. Night lights outside sometimes keep coyotes at bay. My problem is not with coyotes or other chicken takers but the darn beavers! They are hungry before winter and took about 25 tress, some of them fairly large, like 18" in diameter. Anyone have suggestions for beavers?

This morning I found Fuzzbucket my broody Frizzle hen dead on her nest. She had appeared fine but had deep puncture wounds on her body.

Do you have an incubator to try to save the eggs?

The misery just keeps rolling, dosn't it.
Put the eggs in the bator. A friend gave me some turkey eggs, and the momma had been dead on the nest all night. We still had 7 hatch despite the night of cold April weather.

I think the idea of cinder blocks is interesting,..I would like to see one.
