Rabbit Hutch Requirements for Californian and New Zealands

Ours are outside, so they need the top and back at least to be solid. Bottom and front are wire, sides are wire with shutters to block wind/wet as needed.

Hi from Ga. Just finished selling off all our rabbits last week. Some of are does were 15#s we kept them in 30x30x18H cages.

Climate is probably one of the biggest considerations for rabbit houses. This is one of the hottest places in the world so even the outside cages here are, optimally, all wire without using any wood. Most of mine are in a small rabbit barn with cooling, but mine that are housed outside have more like a lean-to set up with open wire cages inside the lean-to, but with the roof raised several feet above the cage tops and any backdrop being set several feet behind the back of the cages.

I use 5/8" 065 wall steel tubing for bank cage legs since it's easier than wood to keep sanitary.

Mine are 16sqft each (4X4) and the outside run & hutches are 8X2. I may be an oddity here, but mine are litterbox trained (bunnies are brighter than kittens), and that takes up 12X24 inches. Then again I also leash and harness them, and let the browse in the garden (we have hawks and they nest in the nearby trees, so bunny exercise happens on a leash for safety). It may be overkill, but since they'll be here all of thier lives, I figure some exercize and space should be part of that life.

I just measured my rabbit cages and this is what they are in - individual cages.

3 feet long, 2 feet tall and 2 1/2 feet wide or deep (however you say it - from front to back - Am I describing that right?). Is this enough room for 1 rabbit to live in?

That size should be fine...that's 36x30" which is a fairly standard size for NZ/Cals and other similar size rabbits. It's probably one of the most common sizes used by many backyard meat producers, and the size allows kits to be kept with the doe until weaning age if one so chooses.

You're welcome.

Good luck with your rabbits. Both breeds are great, and NZ's are notoriously great moms.
