Rabbit thread!!!

So yesterday my rabbit died and I was so appalled by it! He was healthy and happy and after research I discovered he died by fly strike. Fly strike is basically when a fly lays eggs on your rabbit (hindquarters) and the rabbit is eaten from the inside out.. Anyways I had never even heard of it before! I did so much research before getting a rabbit and even then when I was young enough I was in 4-h and we always went over rabbit care and I bought rabbits from breeders that included a care packet but nowhere have I heard a mention of this! Something that can kill a healthy rabbit in 24 hours. I know that maybe some of you might know about this but I just wanted to warn everyone. Wet bottoms or urine can draw the flies but in my case it was a rare treat of watermelon rine. So take this into consideration!

So sorry for you! :(

So sorry for the loss. I lost a litter of kits and an unrelated 3 y o doe to heat stroke this summer. The timer on the a/c in the bunny shed malfunctioned. I felt terrible. I understand doing all the research, feeling as if you are doing the best for your rabbits and then something you can not control happens. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. All the best to you.

Losses happen all the time; it's the ones that you feel were preventable that really drive you nuts! Somebody bred a couple of does, and didn't write it down on the calendar, so I didn't know to give them nest boxes. Lost a litter of Holland Lops on the wire this morning. . . .

Hi, I'm new to this site. I have german giant angora's and satin angora's. One of them, my favorite of course, died this summer but she looked like she had a bad case of diarrhea. She was outside in the shade in a lrg dog cage. Does anyone know what that could of been?
I like to spin thou I am just learning, but it is for myself so I don't mind! I lost 3 adult and 2 kits to a bear in one visit. My husband left the door to their shed opened when he went next door to help him for an hour. He destroyed one cage with 4 kits in with the mother and he only got 2 kits. The mom was able to hide under some wood with 2 kits. He was so upset with himself but accidents happen. We know it was a bear by the paw prints and he tore open one of the rabbits and we had to p/u the pieces everywhere. He even carried a cage 35 ft away before tearing into it. He also killed 5 chicken and a very good rooster. Now that it is hunting season my dd is on the hunt! There's two that come around to us and our neighbors. My avatar is the one who died with the poop all out of her.

welcome to the rabbit thread!

That's really sad you had that happen; my previous pet rabbit, (who was an outdoor rabbit) escaped, got outside the chicken run because i left the door unlocked, (she was in a pen with stilts and hardware cloth in the chicken run for extra protection) and was killed by a neighbor's husky. i felt reallly bad. Now i have one pet rabbit and she is inside as there is also weasles and hawks out there, and it was just too risky for me to do that again. I hope you have better luck now with your rabbits!

Plz. Someone help me i judt found a baby rabbit outside my house. What do i do?? Dont know anything about rabbits. Please help

Our neighbors rabbit must have gotten pregnant right after giving birth, because exactly 1 month later, Here we are with more baby rabbits. They look a lot better than the last ones did, and we discovered them Tuesday night. Only one died out of 6 so far. I think one more might die because it is looking pretty skinny. But the rest look plump, and so much better than the ones from last time, comparing them from a picture I took. hopefully these ones survive!

I assume that this is the Broken doe? Congrats on the new litter! Glad to hear that she is doing a better job this time around; first-time moms often make a mess of things, but they usually do get better with a little experience. If the brown doe was still with the buck when she kindled, she should be due about now . . . .
