i have a couple flemish giant rabbits.
i thought a dog house type structure would be a nice idea for them to have a place to lounge, hide, or nap. I purchased one off Amazon:

Says its constructed of solid fir wood. When I received it, I opened the box and it seems very aromatic. Not sure if I should use it for a rabbit. I researched the "fir wood" and found something saying it could be Chinese fir, which is actually a type of cypress/cedar.

Is it safe???

I agree with @eggbert420. The smell could give your rabbits respiratory trouble. Return the hutch, and get something made from pine, maple, basswood, etc., just not oak. And make sure the wood is not pressure treated. The solution used in the treating of wood is very harmful.

Do you have a "ReStore" in your area? (thrift store for Habitat for Humanity that has reycled building supplies) I've found some great stuff that can be modified for my chickens or rabbits there. My rabbit tractor is made from a repurposed kitchen cabinet and I've made nesting boxes for both rabbits and chickens out of old kitchen drawers. A large drawer, ($1-$4) flipped upside down with holes and doors cut out has made a great "play house" for a 4-8 week old litter of bunnies. Newer drawers and cabinets are often made from press-board or other chemically treated wood which should be avoided, but older ones are usually solid wood. A quick blast with a pad sander takes off old paint. Just a thought.

Great idea! I was going to get something similar to the dog house to use for my bun, but I will check ReStore first. :)
