Raccoon attack this morning! Broken beak, please help!!!

Thank you for the best wishes and the info! It's helping me not become upset. Thank you so much for the recommendation! I figure if she does not drink water soon, I'll give them a call. It's helpful to know who to go to, so thank you! I have a 60w lamp on the side of a travel cage, blanket on top but not all sides so it's about 80 degrees where she's sitting... I figure the would will dry more quickly and I think she is trying to nap now. She's finally more calm because she knows I'm right next to her by the computer.

That raccoon sure scared my poor girl!

Poor, sweet little Ms. Beasley. She does a perfect imitation of an owl when she is feeling better.
I feel bad for her

Oh thank you for the information! Yeah, I figure he'll come back for certain now... I sure am glad our coop is built like a tank. We really took our time on it. We have hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, thankfully too. The ground is so frozen he'd never be able to dig under it, and most of it is buried about 10" or a foot....
So, how do you bait these raccoons? I'd love to know what your secret is, and what in the world we do with it afterward???

Thank you so much for your help! I suppose until spring he will probably threaten me unless I do something about it. My girls seem troubled and scared. Clearly, this thing was menacing them until I heard them.

Aww, thank you! I think she's going to be okay. She's just standing there quietly in the warm cage, opening her beak a lot. She seems to be in pain, poor dear.

I'm going to offer warmed water (lukewarm) all day. I stupidly gave her cold when it first happened, not thinking how much that would hurt.

We just dabbed a little vaseline onto the tip with a cotton swab. I hope that helps keep it from stinging her as much. I'm hesitant to use the superglue method as some say it is a good idea and others don't. She isn't bleeding, or I would take more desperate measures. I was reading about these injuries only 2 days ago, (which is still so weird to me...) and some people use a low-odor type of thing just like super glue. I think it's the vapor from super glue that can hurt them, since it's so close to their nostrils... Not sure though.

If you have/get a live trap, they love peanut butter. Put a bunch on the bait tray and you will for sure catch something(maybe a cat too).

Update: My girl appears to be through the worst of it. Although she is not eating a lot, she is eating and I *finally* got her to drink some water late last night.

She's a bit crabby and not her usual self, but she is mostly staying quiet and calm. Oddly enough, the things I bought for her yesterday since my chicken treat section was running low, (raisins, oatmeal, yogurt...2 kinds!) and what does she really want to eat? Some cake I bought as a last minute decision. It must be the super-sweet thing that attracts her, it's also fluffy and easier for her to pick up. I can tell she is going to have a few days adjusting to a shorter beak. She keeps aiming wrong and missing her food, until I got the cake out. It's spongey enough that she grabs it. I've tried scrambled egg 4x, cottage cheese... not much of an appetite, but I am not too concerned since she is eating. She "winces" quite often while eating, so as that subsides I feel confident she'll be just fine.

It was a huge relief that she drank some water, and after reading other forums I think as long as I keep her inside, (it's only 27 outside right now...) she should be okay. It may take a few weeks to heal all the way though.

I will post a photo or two, and update this when she is healed in order to help others later. As I said at the beginning, I am so thankful for this site or I would have been a nervous wreck.

Thank you to everyone who answered me on this thread!!!

I really appreciate it. :)

I am so happy yesterday is over. Whew. Maybe chicky-momma can get some decent sleep now? Doubtful!

It was 27 degrees a few minutes ago when I just checked, and I am crossing my fingers that no other ladies have a health issue anytime soon.

No prob!!

Here are a couple new pics that show the injury a bit more. It must be akin to having a fingernail torn off, but on her little face! It must be horrible when your face is also your "hands". I saw her bump her beak a few times, then she reacts by opening her mouth wider, like, "ouch!" :(

She doesn't look it, but she's much happier here, having just had many long drinks of lukewarm water. Her little beard is all wet. :)
