Raccoon Help Please

Hands down.... marshmallows! Cat food and tuna fish can smell horrible to us humans after a day or two, but the marshmallows smell good to the critters and people! Plus, the raccoons love them!

Raccoons will go after almost anything.
We have gotten a few in a trap, and also on multiple occasions just woke up in the night to them in the back yard around the chicken coop so we just shoot them on the spot.
I wouldnt do any relocating. Around where I live its illegal to relocate certain species that you trap.

We had a raccoon coming into our yard every night and trapped it using hot dogs.

It was big scary BEAR of a raccoon and it was very hard to release because it filled the whole trap it was so big.

It would growl and nash its teeth and try to get you if you went near it.

Myhusband threw a tarp over the trap, put it in the trunk and took it for a ride to the state forest.

He put the trap outside of the car, got back in the car. opened the window, and used two sticks to open the trap.
That animal ran away as soon as the door opened.
Be careful.

It never came back :)

That is so true. We called the Game Warden to have him come get the raccoon after he was trapped.
Game Warden: "It is illegal to trap raccoons", he said.

Me: "Click" (that was me placing the phone back in its cradle) haha

The next question is, what do you plan to do with it after you trap it? It's illegal to trap and relocate in many areas. Good way to spread rabies, distemper, and whatever else it may be carrying into an area that may not have a problem with those things. I live in the country and I really would not appreciate you bringing your now trap-wise problem animal here. The best thing is to trap and kill them.

Every state has different rules. Some have specific seasons, others you can hunt/trap raccoons all year. Check your state laws to see what you are allowed to do.

Thanks for the responses guys. I decided to hire a professional to come do it as its illegal in my state and I wouldn't know what to do with it anyways.

I used dry cat food for my trap and I caught the nasty coon the first night.

Another trick I have read about is a silly one, but seems effective since it works on baboons as well.

Put something like wet catfood in a container that can be easily smelled and possibly seen through, but only make an access hole the size of a raccoons fist. Roll a small tennis ball or a small wiffle ball in the food and leave it in the cage. When the coon comes along and sees the food and can smell it, but cant get it unless he puts his hand in, he will reach in and grasp the ball. Unfortunately for him, his fist is now too big, wrapped around the ball to get out of the hole. As a result he will set up an alarm and start screaming because he is too stupid to let go of the food. So now he is stuck and making a racket...thats when you come out with a shot gun and BLAMO!!

Raccoons are very often infected with rabies. It is irresponsible to relocate any raccoons because you may be keeping a USDA program to vaccinate coons with an oral rabies vaccine dropped from aircraft from working like the program was designed to work. The child you end up infecting or killing may be your own.

We had NO idea it was illegal to trap the raccoon. Is it legal to shoot in city limits? Obama admin. is crazy about gun control. Better to call an expert. Don't want to be arrested for using your gun.
