Raccoons vs Zip Ties: Who wins?

It turns out that there are stainless zip-ties, who knew?
Why not go with these?
Would work better to attach 1/2" HC to PVC pipe...those jclips aren't going to do that.
Not fond of jclips...and wouldn't drill holes in PVC as it will weaken it.

Make sure your HC pieces are overlapped by a couple inches on the edges.
Is that single piece installed in pic..and you're ready to add another?

Use screws and washers to attach HC to wooden bottom frame.

I raised coons for years. The only thing they can’t get into are padlocks.
I also have some crazy chickens that decided to peck at my zip ties until they broke on their divider.

Nesting boxes are too small in my opinion. The thin edge of bucket lid can do some damage to feet as well. We use the big laundry buckets with the rope handles, cut them in half, put a 1x4 in front to keep straw in and place on the ground. Easy to pick up and clean and snakes can run away not feel trapped.

I agree about the traps. Too close to coop BUT.... If you are loaded with coons, take those traps to your land boundary closest to chickens.

We actually take our extra eggs and put them over our fence in the woods to feed coons, possoms, etc. all dead snakes get hung up on a fence to feed owls and hawks. No problems since we started the bribe system lol. We have ten acres so it works but may not on smaller property.

And here I am thinking my dead animal peace offering is only working in my head lol. I too offer lol/fence hang/wood line. It really does work. Except snakes. They just have to get into everything. But I would rather deal with those then lose birds to the owls, fox, coyotes

Snakes are easy. Kill where you find them. Leave their “I am dead” scent there and it will be a while before you see another.

Another great use for sulphur as well. I line the inside of my coop walls and the inside of my little shed.

Off subject lol “here I am thinking”...

People probably think I am strange but I am Cherokee. We learn from behavior, cherish our birds feathers and believe in peace offerings to our enemies to keep them at bay.

For example... if your neighbor got nosy and looked over your fence and started trouble with the HOA, then go to them and say, I am sorry you don’t like my chickens but you love my eggs so I am giving you an extra dozen to show you how much I love my chickens and want to really keep them. Lol

Or the guy who gives you a peace offering of random chickens for you to resale so you don’t get upset about his chickens running loose.

Or, feed dead stuff far away to the animals too lazy to do their own work or unable to so they leave yours alone. The stuff stinks! Take it please lol

Everyone on here knows something someone else does not know.
It is when we all come together and suggest our unique ideas that we are able to piece together our own grand design for our vision of owning chickens! Environmental factors play a huge part in our conversations and that is why there is no one answer or wrong answer.

So, yep... you are right because it works for you.

Thank you. I will surely try that with the next snake. And yes your environment plays a Huge role. I live on a roughly 200acre farm. So we have learned to live with all the animals. It makes things much easier and peaceful. Now I'm not saying life is perfect. We have had a fox get a duck and chicken. But given our circumstances on the farm (1/4 wetlands) we could be losing many more then just a couple of random happenings if it wasnt for the live "with" them and not against. And I mean like once a year random :)

I will somewhat disagree with this. I did a lot of research before I made the run. Wood, pvc, wood and back to pvc. After speaking with welders, contractors, builders--pvc was the winner. If you drill into wood or pvc--the PVC will outlast the wood. I didn't go with a smaller PVC though, mine is 1-1/4, so it might not be comparable to 3/4 or 1 inch PVC. I did not get confirmation on the smaller stuff because I never had any intention of using the smaller.

If I hadn't already bought the jclips I would definitely do the stainless zip-ties. I just don't want to spend any more money than I need to at this point. But if the jclips are a pain to install, I may just order the stainless ties.

Everywhere that there is hardware cloth contacting wood I have already used screws with washers (did it after that picture was taken), but I did not overlap the hardware cloth...so I will go and cut long strips to put over all the seams to remedy that. Thanks @aart

I'd exchange the jclips for stn stl zipties....will cost more but be much easier to use.

mine is 1-1/4,
Yep, Big diff there.
