the trick to installing hardware cloth is using screws with washers as a come along to tighten the seam so that you can nail it down without gaps or slack. the screw goes in at an angle so that it pulls the cloth taught. once the nails are in you can unscrew and reuse it on the next stretch.

the rolls usually come 4' wide, it's best to put posts a few inches closer together to allow for overlap on both side. like may be 45" on center. if you already have posts that are farther apart than that, you can add 2x4's in between to nail into for the seams. Now that you have predators that have been successful, it's imparitive that you act quickly and be thorough, like a "U" nail every 4 inches. they are very persistent, so it needs to be sowed up nice and snug.
