Raccoons

I have hardware cloth 1/2*1/2 buried 4 inch down, then bent out 12 inch. But for coons there is an easy fix. Works in our corn patch too. We put our a junk radio, tune it to a talk news station, and let it play at night. Doesn't have to be loud, the coons hear it and stay away.
But if all else fails, a 12 gauge will fix the problem too

a radio blasting did not keep the coons out of my attic

Sound effects and funky lighting won't deter predators for long, only good security will work. A predator proof coop and run and electric fencing are most useful, and then trap and shoot varmits if necessary. Dogs are the most expensive and time consuming option, and won't substitute for that safe coop and run. Chickens are on everyone's menu, and are helpless especially at night. Mary

I think they would get used to it...... but no harm in turning it on randomly.... it is all about layers of protection....

If you could wire that radio into a motion detector it would work better than just a radio going all the time. The sudden burst of noise might be enough to make a coon run for the hills. There are also the "red eyes" units that are supposed to make a predator think twice but I don't put much stock into that idea myself.

I am in Missouri lived here all my life (for the most part) we bought our house 4 years ago with 5 acres, and we have never seen a coon until I got my chickens 4 months ago and now they come in family size EVERY night. they have taken out 2 ducks and 3 chicks in 3 weeks and they literally come in 3s and 4s I'm getting so disgusted about the whole situation

That's why I'm spending the time and $$ to build as secure of a coop and run as I can figure out. I didn't need chickens to have them invade my home.

hardware cloth, secured with "U" nails with a 2+ inch overlap around the area that they roost overnight, with secure door, is the only solution I have found.

Crazy Mama, what part of MO? We have lots of coons here in the city day and night and when I lived in the country east of St Joe for years we usually saw them only at night.
