Sorry if I’ve already began a thread about it previously I cannot find it, and I’m still getting used to the new layout of the website.

Anyways, I’m going to be getting a few racing pigeons eventually. They’ll be young birds because I’d like to eventually fly them. They won’t be staying in the main loft as all sections are full, Fantails, rollers and Kings. So they’ll be staying in an aviary, which they’ll at least be getting better ventilation from then the loft. I was just wondering how long I should be settling them for? I’ll probably be making some modifications to the aviary for them like a trap and such.

Thanks for any advice.

Even though you will get young birds, that have not been flown in their previous loft, is no guarantee that they will homeset ( settle) to your loft. (easily) Naturally if you do trap train them, letting just a limited number out at a time, (and HUNGRY) you may have success.
In the past I have released some young birds that were hatched in my loft. They split on me and never returned on maiden flight. In hindsight, I know that I did not trap train as well, as I should have. I think some were about 3 months old at time of release. The longer I had pigeons, the more I learned .
I know that My IDEAL way to trap train, is to do it when they are about 4 weeks old, and still being fed by papa pigeon. They just left the aviary and explored the adjacent roofs, and returned. Never flew far, since still too young and inexperienced.
Just trap-train these like you have been doing all your others in the past. :thumbsup

Thanks for the information. I got 3 young birds last weekend and I’ve currently got them in a spare aviary. I’m considering putting a Fantail in with them later, or moving them in with my rollers. I want them to just learn the area from the rollers, then I’ll probably move them back in the aviary.
