You think this is mean compared to what? Dubbing, vent sexing, toe punching, de-beaking?

I dont think its mean, It usually doesnt have any side effects, at least thats what I've heard.

It's not any different than injecting a vaccine a week before hatching, which tons of hatcheries do. It obviously doesn't hurt the chicks and the color goes away when they get their adult feathers.

ETA: By the way, adorable!!!

they don't stay green? bummer. I could have camo-chicks, and the foxes would never see 'em!

I think it's mean... i can't imagine being steeped in any kind of dye for a week while one is developing could be a good thing... there must be some side effects...

I don't think it is mean at all. They seem healthy, and the dye will fade in time. People dye their hair all the time, you can put dye into frosting and eat it, so I don't really see any harm here. cute pics

chickensducks&agoose :

If they inject the dye before hatching, don't they have to be pretty much 50-50 boys and girls? They can't ALL be boys...

Correct. That's the new method. They used to dye them after vent sexing them at hatch.......then they were all boys.
