Great , rain water was my plan for the sping-summer-fall , it will work for me with coop next to the garage. Will rig up something with a barrel and float system.

Just added a mini one to my silkie coop.....Works so far, although they have plenty of other places to get water while free-ranging all day in the yard. Nice to know that if I keep em in the coop/run they have water and feed available or if I am collecting eggs for hatching and not letting them out to free-range. Made with parts on hand from other projects...

Remember acid rain? When I was a child I imagined that acid rain would dissolve me if it touched me. Well, the reality is not so dramatic, but there are definitely pollutants in rain water. It will vary a lot by area, and just being out in the countryside is not necessarily safe. Industrial or smog pollutants from neighboring regions could travel into your area with the weather and be present in precipitation. I live on the Pacific Coast of the US and I've read that 30% of our air pollution here is actually from coal-burning in China.

The only way to know for sure is to test the water. I'm not saying it's unsafe, just that it's not always the purest water possible just because it fell from the sky.

I use rainwater all the time. Its fine for chickens. Remember, chickens use to live by it before humans started keeping chickens at all...
