Raise your own meat.

I have fertile duck eggs. But we are not too close.

Well they do quack a lot. But I like it :p And yes they are only white, but I like white ducks.

Mine lay all year long. I do have a light on a timer during short days. But it is a low energy bulb so it doesn't bother my bill. in the summer I was getting up to 2 eggs a day fro my girls. About 1 every 10 hours or so. Then on occasion they will skip a day. And once a year they stop laying for about a month. But I have more than one laying so I still get eggs.

I may have to hit you up for those eggs if I can't find any around here. Don't see to many listings for Pekins for some odd reason. But that won't be for a while.

And I think just based off laying abilities I may have to go with Pekins now (plus I've read on here that Scovies can be a pain to pluck) And the white wouldn't bother me a whole lot but the noise may drive my wife crazy. I already have "Kill all those dang roosters" on my honey-do list. lol. I'll make sure they're away from the house a ways so's not to bother her though.

I'm excited to extend my poultry reach past chickens. And super excited to be having more animals... I'm an animal nut.

Oh by the way if you're looking for a good Duck breast recipe my wife makes duck breast and fried taters with a whiskey gravy. It's Fantastic!!

Quote: Well I plan on having them around so sure PM me when you are ready. They are Organic non GMO too.

@ the wife.

I quack up when I hear the females, they sound just like Donald duck when he laughs.

They make good guard ducks. When they hear movement from a person or creature at night they pipe up. They are away from my bedroom, but the kids have to endure it.

Awww. Me too. I love the critters. My man puts up with it and complains... but then I find him our there with his earbuds, sittin in a lawn chair letting the birds out and watching them scratch and have turn out time for a long while.. then he sneaks in with eggs in his pockets. I hear the water turn on before I even go outside and he is filling it up.. I never ask him to do it :p Then again he is only home a little here and there throughout the year since he is in the service.

Ha ha sure. But I have no whiskey.. the smell reminds me of listerine.. :p I already have mouth wash LOL

Ah okay. Well yes we all have our own pallets. :p They make little bottle though right? I just don;t want a big one taking up precious cabinet space if I am not going to use it much.

Oh yes you can typically find small bottles of all kinds of alcohol. They are usually just a few ounces worth and don't take up any more space that a bottle of vanilla extract. I know because cooking with alcohol is one of my things. I like to find different alcohols, herbs and meats that work together to create scrumptious dishes for me and my wife. But small bottles of bourbon are very common at liquor stores.

And as for the link... That's lovely. The American food market is trying to kill us all.

exactly... well if you think about it.. Food and Drug Administration. Should be separate entities.

I may try it. I have cooked with wine and a few others before. I am an herb connoisseur myself. I have a collection of almost anything and buy herbs in bulk . They also have medicinal properties which I use them for in teas.

I've thought about getting into herbs myself but at the present time I don't have the finances to allow it. But one day maybe I will. I've always been a chef at heart, (My mom and dad taught me and both my brothers to cook at a young age) so herbs are my friend but never have had the time to sit down and figure out what's what and who's who in the herb world.

Hey just a thought, Maybe you should create a thread in the hobby section about different herbs and their uses both medicinal and culinary. If you already have done such a thing I'll have to check it out.

And I agree whole heartedly that food and drug does not belong at all in the same boat. That's just a disaster waiting to happen.

I could do that. I have books for my resources. Plus a friend I cal with a lot of experience from a health food store and a degree in herbology. I have a FB group too.

And honestly most grow wild and are easily accessable. And many herbs we already use cook with. I get a lb of herb from SFherb for about $2-7 a bag. They have a minimum order of $30, but it gets you a lot, and my neighbors fill their spice jars from me for a bang of a buck. Helps me go through it.

Thyme, and Fennel are goof for tea to help you overcome a cold and safe for children.

Taking garlic will also help greatly as it is both an antiviral and antibiotic.

I have this thread that didn't seem to take off. Maybe it was in the wrong area.

Yeah the disaster has been brooding for a while now. Its about to hatch.

I'm an herbalist (among many other things), and think that every home should have a small area set aside for medicinal herbs. They don't take up much room, and it can be as simple as planting a flowerbed with them. The only cost is a few seeds, and you might even be able to get them for free if you know someone else who grows them.
