How High off the ground should you build your coop so the chickens can get shade under it?
18". 24"?

We have a 6x8’ coop raised up approx 2.5’ off the ground. We decided to take into account pushing a wheel barrow up to and under the lip of the deck we built for the people door. This way we could shovel out the bedding from the coop into the waiting wheel barrow and take it wherever we wanted. So, the deck is about 4’ long before the stairs are attached. The coop and decking provided much needed shade last summer. We are in the process of adding a metal roof over the whole run. Also, coop is very dry since it is elevated!

Are you planning on wanting to enclose it so it's part of the run? If so, make it as high as you feel comfortable climbing under to get a sick/injured chicken or eggs out from under it.

Make sure you can get under it! They’ll figure out quick if you can’t catch them!

Mine is 3’ high, I can squat and get under to catch them if I have too. We put a low roost under part of it as well so they can be off the ground to nap.

I'd say 18" minimum but keep in mind you need to be able to access it, whether by sending a kid crawling under there or by having side/back emergency hatches. So make it high enough that you feel you can comfortably do that.

Thank you! Love the idea of a low perch!
