Raised Coops Question...

Mine is build up off the ground as well. I did it to make it critter proof it and make it easier to clean it out. I dont have to bend down and I can still climb in when needed.

I initially had my coop sitting close to the ground.

I later found some skids that I wanted to put on my coop to make it more mobile and it gave it the added benefit of raising it off of the ground.

I like this setup better because now no critters can hide underneath it, the chickens now dust bath and can get in the shade under it, and I won't tear up the lower parts of the coop with the weedeater like I did this past summer. Plus, the area that the coop is sitting on gets pretty wet when it rains and tends to hold some water for a little while so now that the coop is elevated, it is not sitting right next to the wet ground which should be better for the wood.

For me, 24 inches off the ground for these reasons, I can clean standing from the outside through the person door, an area for the chickens to chill out and feel safe, cool under there in the summer, plenty of room to clean under the coop, no predator safe area the worry with, and lastly, in case of a torrential down pour and was should someway gather around the coop, it would remain clear and dry especially at night if I'm in the house asleep.

Plus whatever the others said that I didn't.

Here's mine (still in progress, but you can see the enclosed bit of the coop has a waist height floor):

The reasons I went for a raised design are:

1. Less chance of rising damp affecting the coop (we get pretty big dumps of rain during the Summer storms and a lot of it runs overground)
2. Better ventilation
3. Cooler (we have a hot climate and raising it lets air circulate better)
4. Predator/rodent protection
5. Somewhere for the chooks to seek shade on a hot day
6. A shady spot to hang the waterer
7. More floor space in the run
8. Easier access for me to clean/check for eggs etc without having to stoop low
9. The coop doesn't block the view of the run so I can keep an eye out from my window.

and the best reason:

10. My girls have a better view out their window!

I have an 18" space under my coop for all the aforementioned reasons. My girls love it in the summer because their coop is under a big shade tree so they always have a nice cool place to sit during the heat of the day. My girls use their space a lot.

This is mine just before it was finished.
