Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
Yeah, I just saw your second post. It's all good! Where did you hear about sand brooding?

I don't know what post, but it was on a one regarding quail with dry dirt and sand bedding which prevents pasty butt, I then started reading up about it and the only cons are it being heavier and being somewhat dusty.

3 of the things I came across in my research. Can't find the one where I first heard of it though.

Had a third hatch this morning, looks like another blue! ^^ Took the babies out today so they could have some fun outside, and let mama hen-hen tend to the chicks again now that I can keep an eye and ear on her to ensure she doesn't accidentally squish any, as they are snuggled under her in the nest. Even in the day she accepts them.

I got a vid coming soon of them. =P

For a long time, I kept asking wvduckchick to send me some broody vibes because they just weren't doing it! Then suddenly, like you said, I had a couple of them!! One hatched her own, and the other is raising adopted chicks. I also just sold some of my East Frisian Gulls to a gal who is putting them under her broody tonight - I really hope for the best for her!
Let us know how things work out! :)

Broodiness still runs rampant here! I don't have many layers that haven't been broody this year, and 3 are on their 2nd round! One is my first serama broody and i gave her some new eggs from a couple promising pullets. Checked them last night and they are all developing!!

I've got to look up those Frisian Gulls! gorgeous chicks! I'm not familiar with them.

Beautiful chicks! Don't worry about momma hurting them. They quickly learn when to get out of her way! :D

Silkies! Between you and my daughter... I may end up needing to get a few!! :)

Question of the day...
What do you think about socialising (with people, handling them, giving them treats, etc) your little ones? Does it make for having a friendlier bird?

My results have been mixed, and I'm not sure if it's more breed related as to which birds will end up being friendly. We have found (my daughter and I) that it's important for us to teach them the treats come from us so it's easier to catch them if we need to. Chicken "catching" is my very least favorite part of poultry ownership! :)

Maybe, if all goes well and they end up reproducing next year, we can swap some gulls for some orps... I still think about those beautiful lavender babies you hatched. How do they do with the heat? (It's supposed to be 109 degrees here by Sunday and my poor Bielefelders are already panting up a storm!)

My silkie chicks have been reared by me and are super friendly and jump on my lap or back/shoulders for attention and fall asleep on me purring, but are also super brave. My dad has lost a few sandwiches and food items due to them stealing his food when he felt it was at a safe distance away from them! :lau They will also chase you around the yard if you have food! Then again, Silkies are well known for being docile and friendly in temperament.

Even the adults are fairly tame even though I didn't raise them, I just slowly herd them and the chicks to where I want them to go, picking them up and sometimes having to literally push them if they get stubborn and decide to stop. The rooster is a big offender in that. :p And the hen is just as bad when broody.
