Raising Baby Chick-Along

Mottled Java?
Sadly, it's a mottled Silverudd's Blue... which is not a desirable trait among the breed. He's so stinking cute though, and he's growing out with the most delicious inky black and creamy white I hate that he's an anomaly. I guess the second import from GFF has a lot of this outcome in it (kind of like their second import of Bielefelders have CL mixed in producing some white ear lobes.)
At any rate, not sure what to do with him.

I did!! We bought the eggs and about 3/4 of them hatched. The silver too was young and I don't believe he was covering his flock well just yet as most of our silvers didn't hatch!
That's awesome! We need to keep in touch when they start laying and maybe exchange some eggs to diversify the flock a bit. I know there's only been one import, so they're all related, but maybe cousins rather than siblings... :)
I have lots more silver than anything else.

Sweet setup rjohns! If I was planning on raising chicks more than once every year or two, I'd definitely be trying something like yours.
When I do meat birds I like to get 150 at a time so I put 75 in each cell. Eventually I'd like to expand to four cells.

Better you than me. :thumbsup

I'll never ever again have that many chickens. I got broke of that early in life. Even the thought of having to keep up with and then harvest that many makes me want to run for the hills screaming. Nope, not a'gonna do it. Bless your heart ❤️ for being suited to it.

Now ducks, I might could tolerate a passel of them if I had the space. I like ducks a lot. The only animal I know that can actually turn grass into eggs, meat and feathers. And duck fat! My inner foodie (who needs to learn to stay inner and stop bulging out in all the wrong places) loves ducks too. :drool

The only thing that went to the freezer this spring were the extra roos, Toms, and drakes. I too am a foodie...:pop

I have PIPs!!!! Day 20, so I hope i have my temps settled now!! Let's go chickies!!!
Nice!! Which breed are these?
Btw, I am so glad I got your splashy kiddos - my Greenfire shipment is growing out with zero splash!! How is that even possible? (I mean, I know how it's possible, I just wonder why they would do that?) And, what's worse is the two I thought were splash are really mottled black which is like having a Wyandotte with a Leghorn comb. Not cool. My opinion of GFF has suffered.

Question of the Day!!
Noisy!! This batch of chicks I have inside are the noisiest chicks I've ever had. They are non-stop conversationalists! (Frisian Gulls) Any other breeds you've had that kept your house in a constant state of "chick chatter?"

This batch is the Frizzled OE's from GardenWren. She included a couple from a younger hen that laid teal colored eggs. Plus I had a pen of younger teens - boys and girls, and I picked up some laying hens I had sold to someone (they had to give them up). I threw them in with the teens to quarantine, until I could find a new home. They were in that pen for 3 weeks - well the boys weren't crowing, but they were playing. I noticed their eggs were fertile, so I tried hatching a couple.

What's pipped - 1 teal egg and 1 of my EE/???? These are the 2 of the smallest, so that makes sense they are a bit earlier.

I'm so happy that the splash kids made it safely and that they are working out so well. I LOVE the hen I kept. She is laying a dark green tiny little egg. Not sure - I expected them to get bigger, but they aren't. That is strange that NONE of the GFF are splash - what did you order from them?
