Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
I think you will especially fall in love with your barred rock - I have one who has full blown conversations with me. :)

That's amazing, she actually speaks to you, aww.

The fourth chick died while trying to hatch. Three happy, healthy little peepers this morning, though.

I moved mom and babies down to the bottom level of the coop and gave them food and water. My SS pullet tried to pull the little yellow chick out from under Hootie, who just watched her do it, so I used baby gates to make a partition to protect the little ones. Hopefully Hootie will become more protective once the babies are moving around more and she snaps out of her broody trance. She normally rules the coop with an iron fist.

Aw they remind me of the three chicks I had when I was younger, but I had to give them away when they were pullets, oh well.

I believe it!! Totally entertaining for those of us with no broodies:lau:pop
Yesterday my daughter set one of them in a water bucket. (Smallish bucket, water not very cold, 100+ degree day.) She was so in her trance that she sat there for a good 20 minutes before she was like, "Oh my, this is a very strange nest I am sitting on... oh, wait! What am I doing in this water bucket?" and finally jumped out! That's what you get with a broody barely old enough to be laying eggs in the first place! Nest? Water bucket? Whatever!!

Two of my seramas (Sara the buff, Carrie the exchequer) had been sitting together. Sara started first, Carrie joined a few days later. So they hatched 5 chicks and all was well...for a few days. Now Sara has decided that Carrie is no longer needed or welcome. she is trying to run her off! But Carrie isn't giving up. She struts back and forth on the roost pole above them! I got these evil pics of her, she was pissed! She actually wasn't named until this happened! They were all in the nest box together at dark though.

The drama continues.

I hear her thinking - "a bucket of pigs blood, that's all I need..." haha - poor girl. She had her heart set on being a mamma and now the dream is fading. :(

Okay "chick-along" friends. I'm leaving the care of the "farm" in the hands of my (capable when they want to be) adult children while the hubs and I knock out a section of the Pacific Crest Trail on our yearly backpack excursion. They have check lists and instructions, Oh, and big bonus bribes if "everyone is alive, healthy, and happy" when we return. Now, the goal is not to worry about anything and to really just enjoy the adventure! See y'all later!
