Raising Baby Chick-Along

Pics
Today was an exciting day. Hootie, my broody pullet (do I call her a hen now that she has hatched chicks, even though she's barely 10 months old?), took her babies out into the run for the first time. She's doing a fantastic job with her chicks; hopefully I can get pictures of them out an about tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Reba, one of my almost 5 week old chicks, did not have a great day. I found her stuck in the electric net fencing this evening. Luckily, there is so much vegetation right now that the fence isn't very hot, but she was still pretty traumatized by her experience. I had a work event all day and was gone from 6 am to 7 pm, so I don't know how long she was stuck. I'm 90% sure that Hootie was the one who chased her into the fence, because my other chickens are fairly laid back, but Hootie (even before she had chicks to "defend") has always been an aggressive leader for the flock. Except for being terrified, Reba doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. She was happy to be saved and returned to her panic room when I found her. The rest of the littles had no interest in leaving the panic room this evening, and I don't blame them! I'm crossing my fingers that Hootie will settle down a little as her chicks grow and allow me to get these girls fully integrated in the next couple of weeks.

Today was the big day! We moved outside to the big coop!! We are loving the great outdoors and I have reclaimed the utility room as MINE again! :wee

Two of my seramas (Sara the buff, Carrie the exchequer) had been sitting together. Sara started first, Carrie joined a few days later. So they hatched 5 chicks and all was well...for a few days. Now Sara has decided that Carrie is no longer needed or welcome. she is trying to run her off! But Carrie isn't giving up. She struts back and forth on the roost pole above them! I got these evil pics of her, she was pissed! She actually wasn't named until this happened! They were all in the nest box together at dark though.

The drama continues.

Well, Sara is still keeping Carrie at a distance, but i think Carrie had one of the little ones part way down the ladder today. She also stands guard at the door to their coop, i have it open so they can venture into the run when they are ready, but Carrie is keeping anyone else from coming in. They are still sleeping in the nest box at night, all together. It's kind of an odd arrangement they seem to have, but appears to be working.

My neighbor had a pullet that decided she wanted to live in a pine tree in my front yard. She has been living there for the past 3-4 months.
I could never find any of her eggs and was thinking maybe she was just too young to lay yet. I have no idea how old she is.
She would join my flock in the daytime and go back to her tree every night.
I was hoping to find some of her eggs but I couldn't find them anywhere.
I went away this past weekend and when I got home there were at least 12 chicks here!
I'm so excited!
