Raising Baby Chick-Along

20170919_115626.jpg My chicks just got released from the space i blocked off for them in the coop. Three times as much space, it is 4x10. I am thinking pretty soon they won't, need a light at all. Windows open today, just lovely out.

My June babies don't look like babies anymore! The Australorp, RIR, and Delaware are quickly surpassing my nearly year old EE and will soon outweigh the SS, too. They're starting to develop their combs and wattles, too. The Faverolles is less mature but is also starting to become a very pretty girl. She's kind of an oddball personality-wise, and she sounds more like a goose than a chicken, but I find her highly entertaining. She's also becoming the guardian of the flock, sounding the alarm for any kind of "suspicious" activity.

They look fully feathered to me Cap. How old are they and cold are y'all getting at night??
They hatched August 13 i think. I know, i am an overprotective mother. It is mostly 60s and 50s at night. I keep one window open for ventilation. I just have one light bulb in there, in case they get a chill they can hang out there.

My chicken babies got three times the space they had in the coop because i took the divider out. They were getting crowded again. I have the siding on the front of the coop now. And i cut the second pop hole today. There are two perches in there now so they can try those out. They are really growing! Must get more pictures. Here is my coop so far.View attachment 1139767

Looking Good! I know who i consulting when i am ready to build:thumbsup

I got another lucky momma/baby shot :D

But I don't understand something. I think this might be the chick that hatched in the incubator, almost a week after the others. Its been out there for 2 days, and one momma is protecting it, the other one is grabbing it by the neck and slinging it! Luckily its pretty quick, or the other momma steps in for protection. I guess first momma knows this isn't one of the ones she hatched, but the other momma still wants to care for it. I hope they work it out before the little booger gets hurt.

ADORABLE pic!!! Poor baby! So glad someone is looking out for that little one!

My girl Fiona is still broody:barnie week 2! But i think she is coming out of it...she is not pacing frantically as much to get back when we boot her out of her best. I am home for the weekend so I am taking all the bedding out and blocking the best this weekend in hopes this will be the final push she needs to SNAP out of it!:D :fl

They have accepted the 5 day younger baby just fine now. But one of the original ones may end up a failure to thrive victim. It had a little pasty butt, and momma kept cleaning it, but it got kinda raw, and i think others have pecked the area. This chick is super tiny, smaller than the 5-day-younger chick. I gave it some ND and washed its butt good this evening, put some Neo on it, and put it back out with mommas. Hopefully the ND brings it around. :fl

Oh boy, good luck. You may have to resort to the wire bottom cage. I have not had luck waiting one out.

I hope not! She is definately starting to come out of it...so hoping no nest access this weekend and being outside or running around the house will finish off her broody spell!!!! We have gotten cooler here fast....high 40s and rainy so hoping the cooler weather gives her the clue...its not baby time!!!!!
