Raising Chickens in Arkansas

Hello,
I have always had a few chickens for table eggs, but now I would like to seriously breed a particular breed. I would like to have a breed that is practical, not an ornamental breed. One that is relatively rare. I've already lurked on this site looking at the different breed threads. If anyone has any ideas please post here. Thank you

Hello and Welcome To BYC! You might look at some of the endangered or heritage breed lists, there are various lists from conservancy groups of possibilities, ie the Livestock Conservancy http://www.livestockconservancy.org/index.php/heritage/internal/conservation-priority-list#Chickens some of those breeds are available from commercial hatcheries, but they tend to be pretty different from true heritage line birds.

Personally, I would choose Blue-Laced Red Wyandottes, just because I think they are so pretty (but so are many other breeds).

I only got 2 chicks of this breed, but they both turned out to be roosters. Look up pictures of the hens, if you haven't seen them already. So cute.

Lots of Heritage Breeds out there that are dual purpose for eggs and meat.
