Raising chicks - Queensland, Australia

Thanks for the fast replies !

I was only thinking of raising indoors as I thought I should quarantine them from my other hens.
If I put them outdoors, they would be in their own box but would still be in the main coop / run area. Would this be "quarantine" enough ?

I have nowhere else to put them that wouldn't either overheat or be safe from predators.

Couldn't have said it better myself - but in the hot weather of Queensland make sure they don't overheat!

In regards to overheating, I think the highest temperature it has gone to inside the house this month is 40°C / 104°F. Perhaps a bit too warm ?

These chicks are less than a week of age and already enjoying the sunshine. I also forgot to mention i use a 125 watt bulb. The 250 are much too hot.

Your chicks are so cute !
Your dog is like my dogs, they sit next to the chicken coop and just stay there, as if they are guarding !

If your temperatures are that warm I agree you don't need to worry about heat, especially during the day.

Chicks put out a lot of dander and dust and can be hard on the human lungs in close quarters.

Generally I don't worry about very young chicks carrying any diseases, especially if they come originally from a hatchery, so quarantine isn't an issue for me. I have snuck chicks under broody hens without fear of diseases.

Sounds like picking a good brooding spot is a more important decision for you.

She is adorable, but her intentions aren't so noble. She's guarding them from the other dogs, she thinks she gets first dibs on them as snacks, but it never works out for her. She does keep the more troublemaking dogs away.

Yes I wouldn't trust my dogs with the girls on their own as they are Miniature Fox Terriers and they can't help but kill anything that starts to move quickly ...

Hmmm, well if I don't need to quarantine them, I can put them in the main coop in a large box with fly-screen on the top so they can get some ventilation, but won't be able to jump out.
I could then put a bucket in there too in case they would like a bit more heat.
