See good question? Now... your really thinking about this chicken stuff. I knew you woukd be a good chicken Keeper.

Lol. I am constantly thinking of new questions. I can chicken proof the top with some metal mesh I have. Would having a lamp shining over the bins and the heat lamp be enough lighting for them? Is there anything I need to clean up chicken poop?

We can talk about the mesh.
Yes, you'll need a chicken pooper scooper!!! But, there are other ways to take care of the poop.
Look around on this site for ideas in the "Forum" section.

Ok. Would 1/4 inch dowels be too small or a perch for chicks? If so, I could glue two together to make it larger. Would there be any problems with that kind of perch?

No Dowls. They are chickens that sit flat foot. Parakeets use dowls.
You need a 4x2 board. Then they sit on the 4 inch side.
