Raising Guinea Fowl 101

Ginger successfully accepted the keets :) Here she is with one of the little mystery/brown keets. The other three were under her.

I've had one guinea hen hatch and raise chicks and she's been a great mother :) Carefully raised her chicks and slept on the ground with them until they could fly into the tree. The dads all helped too. I had more hatch yesterday. We'll see how the new mama does :)

I have done research on Guinea Behavior. In the wild the whole flock will raise and protect the keets. Even the bachelors will do babysitting duties.

Lol, thanks! I meant to reply to a single post back on page 44 or so, but I guess you can't do that. Oh well :) this is a fascinating thread!

You can do that but your post will still end up at the end of all the other posts which is why it is very helpful to use to the quote button so we all know just who you are replying to.

For those of you considering letting a guinea hen raise the young...GOOD LUCK!!

Guineas can get lucky and raise them, maybe in drier areas better than here. We have morning rains, cool to cold morning year round with lots of dew. Dew will kill the keets. They are very fragile for a couple weeks.

To me it is not worth the risk. I wish you well if you try it. I would prefer to use a chicken that is mellow and will not go bat poop crazy if I keep her locked up for a day or two over bad weather. Besides having Keets imprint on chickens lessons some of the adult criminal behavior...

I figured climate would have a big factor in it. Here its similar to the part of Africa they are indigenous to. But Here is the caveat to it. Unless the Guinea hen goes broody here in confinement those eggs will be either hatched by me or under a broody. Especially my breeding stock. There are just too many predators out there to let a hen go Commando...
