Raising Guinea Fowl 101

ok question for you more Guinea experienced folk. Mine are just over 2 months old, they have adopted the b. australorp pullets and they run together constantly. Problem is you turn them out of the run and they will not go farther than 8 ft from the run and constantly head back into it. Help! Want them to roam but they are scared to leave the run.

Give them some time, pretty soon they'll be on your rooftop just like mine and duluthralphie's!! and then the next thing you know they'll be 1/2 mile, 1 mile down the road or so. Mine don't go much more than that! You can also throw some bird feed further out from the coop and let them forage in the grass for that, they'll like that.

I am thinking of hatching my replacement guineas under one of my broodies again, It makes the best behaved Guinea...Which is like saying " my son is the prison model prisoner of the month"...

my plan for later is to have Sumatras as the broodies. they are just about as active as a guinea and can fly pretty dang good.

Well mine have been out 9f the coop and run all day. No wing hits this time! But now they want back in for the night. So I am not sure if I will let them stay out since I can't imagine they will let me open the gate for them.

Open the gate. they will let you if they want in. If not they might burn your house down when you sleep!!

Guineas can be evil! Never trust or cross them.

They are in with a bit more drama then needed. Goofy birds tried to go through welded wire fence. Don't know if I will try to let them out again after all the effort it takes.

You can train them to come for treats or you can teach them to obey you. I use a long stick to herd mine into the coop at night. Ninety-nine percent of the time it takes less than 5 minutes to put them in. Only on a rare occasion when one decides to block the door and go after the ones wanting in does it take longer. Even then it doesn't take more than 10 minutes for me to herd them in the coop in the evening. You can use two long sticks as extensions of your arms to get their attention.

I use bamboo fishing poles. light and can reach about a mile.
