Thats right. They will lay right next to the ice. I do that here also. If it gets to hot and I have a litter I would just bring the nest box in the house. Right before dark and early in the morning I would take the babies to the mom. She would jump right in. It only takes a minute for her to feed them. Then right back in the house. I have done this many times. They babies would die in the heat.
