Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

Hubby teases me about upcoming processing lol I socialize with the chickens and pet them and check on them lol I really sorta was expecting lazy fat chickens I'd be ready to be rid of...they're not lol they're active, friendly and I sorta worry about a lack of fat on them lol They're big n meaty but how much fat should they have? More in thinking but I guess Monday after we process a few we can see :)

I can do this...I can do all the rest already. Just don't make an efficient um, dispatcher. Yet. All the proper materials are here or arriving today(cones-bleed out tubs-to help keep things clean and such) and its just me and him so I don't want him to hold the executioners job all by himself :/

I'm rambling...have to go feed the creatures!

This pleases me :)

I added a corn to their diet to add fat after I processed a few and realized that they had no fat from the feed I was giving them. I fed 2 cups of corn for 50+ a day for a week and had a really nice layer of fat on the rest.

The dispatching gets much easier. The first time I had to do it I almost.... almost... cried.

*Those were NOT tears it was windy and I had dust in my eye!*

I found by the third time I had to butcher, it was like clockwork. The deliciousness of home raised chicken will have you salivating when you know it's butcher time! Ours have a firmer texture than store purchased chicken, but they also have FLAVOR and you can over cook them in the oven, and they don't dry out like a store bird either. I LOVE my home grown birds on the table as much as in the chicken pens.

For my notes, the 8 week olds (37) consume one five gallon bucket of fermented feed per day. Twice a day feedings.

Wow, that's a lot of food!

I'm camping for 4 days this weekend, and the broilers will be getting plain ol' dry food. I've had some out for the past week and they ignore it almost completely in favor of FF. Guess they'll eat it when they are hungry enough!

Overcooking...it's the only style of cooking I can do well!

I wish I could be at home socializing with the chickens (sleeping in my bed :gig). I am trying NOT to get attached to them because it will be hard to process when that time comes.
