Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

When he called with a question about a layer I have for sale on craigslist, while chatting I mentioned how the meaties are bottomless pits and sent him a link to that YouTube video. He made me an offer.

You can't beat that......congrats!

We took a $160 offer.
1/2 bag of chick feed & 1.50/chick x's 25 original order cost was what it cost us. And time. But time is paid in other ways and absorbed.

Although deal isn't done until noon lol but fairly confident.

YOU GO GIRL !!!!!!!!!!!!!! My kinda deal !!!!!!!!!!

:highfive:

Lol I did.
I had empty nest syndrome. Only cure was more chicks. So hubby said 50 were ordered last night and they ship Wednesdays so by next Friday they should arrive, we need another brooder (with a lid!)

My postman carried the last order around all day in his toasty truck lol he said he missed hearing peeps and it was warmer than the counter at the office...can't wait til he sees double hehehe

I do love the babies!!

We got wire for the brooder bottoms today :) heh.
And he's working on a 2nd brooder now. The 1stvone is large but next Fridays order is 50.
1st order was 25 and at 2 weeks, feeding time was crazy so we're going to do two groups.

I wonder if I should do a comparison of some sort since I have the ability to seperate the 2 groups...
Reg vs. FF or somethin along those lines. That's been done I'm sure and I'd hate to waste feed.

Maybe fermenting 2 types. And record advantages/disadvantages...I have a week to decide. Lol

I need to build a brooder that I can have outside, close enough to the garage so that I can use a cord for the heat lamp. I have some time next week during T-day break. Angelisci, what are the dimensions of your brooders? Mine won't need to be as large, but...just in case, I'd like to build one big enough to hold 20 or so chicks.

I'm thinking of getting another set of 13 broilers in the first week of Dec. They'll be around 3 weeks old and ready for the pen without heat by the time my first set is processed. With my current birds, I ordered them through the feed store, but this time I'll be getting them in the mail. I've never gotten chicks in the mail before.

Oh, and this next set of broilers will be on freshly milled, organic feed from start to finish. I'm part of a feed co-op, and we only order feed every few months. I missed the order for this set of broilers, but they'll get finished out on the fresh stuff. This feed is amazing, (at least the layer feed is) and it works out to only $4 more per 50lb bag.

Yes, please do a comparison.

The 1st brooder was 3 ft across, 3 ft deep and 5 feet long. On wheels and fits through our doorways so I can brig them outdoors (or indoors) without picking up all the chicks. 22 chicks At 3 weeks old (sold batch at 3 weeks that was in this brooder) fit in it still. It did get a lil rough at feeding time until we made a bigger trough.

The 2nd brooder is 3 ft wide, 2 n a half feet high and 6 feet long. Mounted on a cart with wheels - like a home depot flat dolly.
We used a wire bottom this time, added another heat lamp, 2 pulley troughs for feed and are going to put them out in the rabbitry for the 1st 2 weeks.
