Raising our 1st set of CX meaties

That's what she said! She wasn't shy about it. She explained "everyone is in the same ballpark so Sou should be too and my customers will leave if I have to raise prices later instead of starting high." I told her I can raise 2 chickens per her 1 and its not fair a consumer has to pay so dang much for good meat. She said she can't free range. She feeds dry and for minimal profit sells at $5/lb. I told her I feed FF and range dawn til dusk, but the FF cuts wasted food down and she should try it. She hung up on me lol so whatever. We just want to raise enough to have fresh healthy meat available and it pay for the next batch :) Not looking to charge stupid money to people so they can eat real homegrown chickens. When I was growing up we went to farmers markets for quality cheap food raised by locals and often bartered goods. NOW natural local food is crazy in prices and no one wants to trade. Lol
She wanted you to raise your prices because she is going to lose business if you keep your prices below hers. Everyone will buy your broilers instead of hers and she will lose out on the deal.

oooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad that you posted this. I saw a cooking show on TV this Sunday and it was about those internal eggs from the pullets that are about to lay. There is a restaurant that makes a special soup with those eggs. People LOVE the soup and they can't make enough of it. I also was fascinated when I saw it. The man that owns all of these chickens can look at the pullets and pick out the ones that have all of these eggs inside of them and picks them out and processes them. They showed him picking out the chicken, processing it and showing all of the eggs in the pullet. They also showed how this special soup was made. It was sooooooo interesting.
I processed 4 RR pullets a few weeks ago that had started laying, and they were full of egg yolks....and good schmaltz-making fat. I wish I had known there was a recipe for a soup using them. The dogs might not have been happy, though.

LOL @ she hung up on you. :lau

Do what works for you and ignore what she is telling you. Which I know that you will. I'm glad that she hung up on you before you told her something she didn't want to hear. :lau

I agree with you as far as trading. I love to trade. If I were closer to you, we could definitely do some trading. I prefer trading over getting the cash money. That works better for me. Kinda like me trading those ducks for my pig in a few months.

And her lose as far as if she doesn't try the FF.

Keep doing what you are doing. :thumbsup

Something that one of my friends found was very interesting. Does anyone have any small local breweries? We are looking at getting a surplus of (OMG! Free!!!) free barley returns from a local brewery here. We are going to be able to get 500# of it a week, free! We are considering putting a bunch of us together and purchasing birds and then getting together to butcher. When food is free it makes raising them on a large scale so much more enticing.

My friend has looked into it, and the protein content is amazing. Perfect for putting weight on things like meatbirds and pigs. We are actually considering both.

I am so glad you mentioned this!!! I just got off the phone with one of the local microbreweries in my area, and they give their spent grains away as well! They have a rotation of individuals who get the grain, so I just got emailed them to get into the rotation. They brew twice a week as I understand. They put the grains into large trash cans, and you take the cans and then return them empty. I am really excited to get this, which will make my meat birds very happy!

I love trading lol Im going to be trading one of my blue layers for a welsummer on Thursday :)
I usually trade plants throughout spring for animals or supplies lol helps supplement my chicken addiction :lau
You mean the 79 ducklings coming your way? :gig

Ya, unless feed takes a drastic spike I think we are just fine :) when I do smaller batches it costs more usually too. So we save on cost ordering in bulk.
