Raising Quail.....Do You Need A License????

The species is Quail, the breed is button or coturnix or bobwhite etc. regardless to what you do with them you need a permit for quail in NC.

No these are species not breeds. Buttons are a different species from bobwhites which are a different species from cortunix. To get even more technical cortunix is actually a genus name not a species name. There are several species of cortunix and buttons are actually in the same genus. The buttons scientific name is Coturnix chinensis. Quail and pheasants then share the family name of Phasianidae.

Breeds of quail would be like jumbo, texas a&M, or the various color varieties. These are variations on the different species of cortunix and bobwhite.

Buttons should fall under pets equivalent to caged birds like parakeets and finches. Right now they are kind of in limbo since not many people know about them. The laws have not yet been written to include buttons. There should be no problem keeping them but you may have the occasional clueless person try to tell you otherwise since they are technically a cortunix quail species. There purpose and use is strictly as a pet though not for meat and game.

It's nice that this is explained....because yes, like my coturnix quail, are actually Pharoahs, and Jumbos (but are the same birds, just one line is bred bigger than the other). I acutally learned too that "Button Quails" that we love and know today as the lil guys, are actually not the true button quail known by people over seas.....the true button quail is a crane species...

I thought that was an interesting tidbit i'd put in. Our button quails we own though ARE quail it's just that the name button quail technically doesnt apply to them where they originate from. THey are actually known as Chinese Painted Quail. Coturnix (like pharoahs) are knwon as Japanese Coturnix Quail.

If there bobwhite, in pa you only need a permit if your going to sell them or even give them away..but here you dont need one to just have them for personel use....You would really want to look into your game dept's to see what there regs call for when having them..However Depends on what type of quail you have, you may not even need one at all.
