Raising Urban Chickens in Jacksonville, FL

Hi BYC! I live in Jacksonville, FL and have 6 small chicks about 3 weeks old... Has anybody else in the NE Florida area had some experiences w/raising chickens in this urban area? Legal or not? Any were there any incidences w/pesky neighbors? City officials? I'm trying to prepare myself as much as possible and have been doing tons of Internet research but have barely come up with any info on raising backyard poultry... Is there anyone out there who has? I would really appreciate any input provided. We keep everything super clean. We live in a historic part of the right smack in the middle of the city. I've heard of many urban flock owners but don't know much about their experiences here in Jacksonville.

What part of Jax are you in? there is someone in the Arlington area on here. I will try to see if I can find out who they are, I think I pm'd them a little while back. I used to live in that part of town (was stationed at Mayport). If you are on the OP side of town, there is a person from Middleburg on here too. I know that is outside of the city, but maybe they know someone closer to you. I will get back to you though if I can find the Arlington person.

Hi, I'm in Jacksonville, on the Westside near NAS JAX. I have a stealth coop, right in the middle of Ortega! Oooooohhhhh!!!!! Well, there goes the neighborhood! HA!

My coop is on the deck, not the ground, and is hidden behind tall shrubbery for the most part. I keep the shavings clean, odor is almost non-existant and I'm very careful who I let know I have them. My best advice for you is not to have any crowing roosters....dead giveaway. Although I have a dominant white silkie hen that makes almost as much noise. My feeling is, if people aren't annoyed by them, there's no reason to complain. Of course there are always the busy bodies that delight in making trouble for others. These can only be avoided by strict secrecy. Can't complain if they don't know, right?

Hey, come to the next Bent Creek Feed Store chicken sale/swap April 17 and meet a few kindred spirits. It's from 9 am until 1 or 2 pm and we'd love to meet you and welcome you to the hottest addiction in town.

I have some at my parents house in OP they live close to Middleburg so we figure they wouldn't be too much of a problem there. My parents neighbors know all about it and they are cool with it. I missed the last sawp meet but i'll be sure to attend the next one. I don't have any roosters in my house but i have a barred rock rooster and a rir rooster with their flocks at my parents home. I am currently working on adding some Bev Davis Copper Marans to our flock. I feel better having seen responses from you all and I truly appreciate it. I keep both flocks super clean and there is never any odors to worry about.

I'll look forward to meeting you at the next show. Put it on the calendar, April 17. It's usually the last Sunday of each month, but in April it would fall on Easter so we moved it back a week. Where do you buy your food/bedding/supplies? I get mine from the Bent Creek folks. They are a family owned small business and very nice to deal with. They also have one of the largest stocks of different poultry medicines I've seen...prices are good too.

No I didn't see that. They wouldn't want tiny little silkie eggs I'm sure. It takes 4 to make an egg sandwich! HA! I'm getting between 4 and 9 each day and we use them up eventually. I really like the difference in taste from the store bought ones.
