Random Eggs smell like fish when cooking!

So my Polish bantum's small white eggs smell like fish when they're cooked but don't taste like fish... the smell is off putting though. I've been searching for a way to have them not smell like fish! Will try the non soy thing, but I did find this... "Your eggs are safe to eat, although you may not be a fan of the smell. Let me explain the odor. The fishy egg is a known phenomenon in egg production. Certain breeds of chickens, particularly, but not limited to those that lay brown eggs, have a gene that converts fatty acids in their diet to compounds that smell fishy."

I know this is a pretty old post, and perhaps the answer is here and I just didn't see it. I have been having the fishy smelling/tasting eggs too. It's my Rhode Island Reds that are producing fishy eggs. So what my understanding is there are a whole lot of things that can cause this, including Omega-3's. However, the hens get Omega-3's just by eating the grass. So I don't know how to stop this. :( The previous post is correct, they are not harmful...unless making my pregnant stomach turn is considered harm (lol). I am hoping my other chickens don't suffer from this. I can at least give eggs from my other hens and just give the fishy eggs to me and my family. Lol

I've been scouring the internet trying to find information on WHY my eggs smell like fish when cooking! Ive had buff orpington hens for the past 4 years and last spring added 5 standard cochins and 3 black jersey giants. Suddenly this spring I now have eggs that smell like fish when cooking them, and have even had friends complain they tasted like fish!! I love providing myself and friends with fresh eggs but am unable to with this. Ive checked their layer time and again, no fish meal, or omega-3 anything in it. Nor do I feed them seafood scraps of any kind. PLEASE HELP!!

[/quote ±-----------; Couple of causes I can think of for fishy tasting eggs one ,it's genetic . second , there's a study out on the Net revealing that when brown egg layers are fed canola their eggs can come out fishy tasting . interesting huh ? Best , Karen

Web search; 'soy-free diets for poultry" article by Oregon State University

" Feeding canola to poultry ", by eXtension.org

"Trimethylamine deposition on the egg yolk from laying hens with"... In Poultry Science by J Wang 2013
This article is scientific and also discusses the genetics behind the fishy flavor
( Canola is irradiated rapeseed).
Best,

Well reading up on this chloline chloride ( CC) which seems to be the cause of the fishy tasting eggs is interesting. (See article by Wang) apparently in humans . It is responsible for Clearer thinking and retaining facts. it's bioavailability is low because of the action of the gut. it's kind of interesting . it's used a lot in animal feed because it's a cheap source of this non essential nutrient.
CC needs FMO3 to keep it in check so that the eggs don't taste fishy .when there's not enough of FMO3 , the CC builds up in the bloodstream until enough of it is passed into the yolk when the egg is formed ..
and the yolk is fishy tasting

Best,
Karen
