Random food question....

If my own experiences are similar to others who have been in the same circumstance, I think you will find that a lot of people who were in Vietnam or the Philippines ate dog, monkey and several other things that were quite unusual. I really think that it is a cultural thing. Many Asian countries eat rats and here in the US quite a few people eat squirrel (which I would consider to be the same as rat). Bugs are normal in parts of Africa. Many religions have prohibitions against eating certain foods while others think those same foods are delicacies. And then if you are hungry enough I would guess that a person would eat almost anything available, including another person.

It's cat the other white meat.

Actually, it was spurred by a conversation with my son about religious food prohibitions and food customs. It came up because of he asked about what a friend said about pizza on the last night of Passover. It started as a discussion about Passover, bread, pork, pizza and comparisons to friends who are vegetarian for religious reasons. It went on to what people eat or do not eat for religious reasons. Our conversation went from prohibitions to pork and leavened bread, to not eating meat at all, and to where we as a family stand on eating meat. Basically, it was a teachable moment, in the car, with my kid.

It did however make me wonder where other people drew the line. And it did make me wonder how much of what we eat isdue to cultural squeemishness or a moral objection.

I didn't even know the whole dog eating thing had come up. Interesting though. And again, I don't really see a moral divide between eating dog or eating cow. My EEWWW factor is entirely cultural, and I'm smart enough to know that.

***friends, I know my spelling sucks tonight, but I'm too tired to fix it. I hope I will not be pilloried.

I though of another so called delicacy that will never again cross my lips...caviar. Nasty, salty, slightly slimy but with a pop, fishy, smelly....yuck! Can you tell I really liked it? And before all you caviar loving foodies jump all over me and tell me I haven't tasted the real thing...this was the real thing. I'm not big on seafood any way, and for me this embodied all the things I don't like about seafood.

No, not all meat is equal..
They each have a different taste. Some i like and others i dont. But i wont judge others for eating things that i wouldnt..
To each their own choices in life..
I may do a little... :sick to tease them... but really its not my body its going into... so i dont really care.

This also brings up another issue..
So many people judge others if they dont eat expensive "farm raised" meat.
I do understand that many factory meat plants are not really humane... but these people that say we should only eat organic/ farm raised meat are STILL eating an animal that died....
I guess i just dont get how they can judge others when they eat meat themselves... :idunno

With raw oysters, I'm just not sure that I could get something that looked like that close enough to my mouth to eat it. The one time I managed to get one in my mouth, my reaction was much the same as Redhen's and Happy's.

I'm off to have morally unambiguous brownies the questioning child baked. He has a future as a baker, he's come up with some mighty fine recipes for a 10-year-old. He's very interested in food and cooking. That's why he asked what was up with pizza and Passover. Then I'm off to bed. I've reread some of my posts for the evening...my typing and spelling, and possibly even what I'm trying to say shows a distinct lack of sleep.

See you in the morning.

Meat definitely has it's own independant flavor.

I have tried most kinds at one time or another. As for religious reasons it goes in and it goes out that is about it for me.

Healthwise some is OK in moderation but with any food too much is not good.

Culturally to each their own, I don't eat bugs or guts although some bugs are said to be good.
