Got a mug with a lid...she avoided me for a solid week!

Don't like my coffee sweetened!

It is rather bittersweet when a chick crows for the first time. Were you hoping for a roo?
No, but it's no biggie. We can have roos, and our neighbor actually requested that we get one. I am a little I'll at ease with the idea of eating fertilized eggs, though (for religious reasons). But talking with a monk, I think the situation is worth it. Keeping Picotee will prevent him from ending up in a potentially bad situation. And not all eggs will be fertilized, nor will the hens choose to incubate all that are fertilized. I save one life yet interfere with potential lives. It's a Karmic trade off.

Unforeseen personal issues cropped up today, so everything has been put on hold for a few days.

In the meantime, here are the babies enjoying outside time:

Finally! Pics of my "run within a run." It's made to be temporary because in my chicken utopia, all of my birds will get along famously, and I will he able to remove the inner run (yeah, right).

I used horse fence we had in the garage and shaped a 10x3 area to keep the babies in and the big girls out. Everything is either cable tied or bungeed so I can take it out in a couple of minutes. Their coop is under construction. I had originally intended to just keep them all in the original coop, but I decided I'd just go with the second coop to make everyone's lives easier... except mine. I should have it finished tomorrow or Tuesday, depending on the weather.

These pics are from a week or so ago.

BTW: The pet carrier is how I move them from the isolation pen in the coop to the run.
