i have a 22 week silki cockerel who has just started trying to mount on of my girls.

The girl that he’s after however is not laying yet. He avoids the ones that are.

Does this mean she is getting ready to lay?

Do you have hens, and he's avoiding them and going for the pullets! That would be normal; the adults are making him eat 'humble pie', and the pullets are fair game.

I have pullets. Out of nine only two are laying

Well that messes up my post. You couldn’t see my answer so here it is. I have 9 pullets two of which are laying but he does not go near the laying birds

So he's found two who are interested in him, or submissive by nature, or more polite than the others. If nobody's injured, it's all fine.

I'm guessing that the older hens have long since put him in his place. He's gonna need to impress them first, which isn't gonna happen until he's past his randy, hormonal-overload, chasing anything with feathers approach. I'm betting he'll get there, but it's going to be closer to his adulthood
