Rant...Yucca

Quote:
Pretty similar regulations in Arizona, but it depends on hte exact plant and its location. The are a lot pickier on developers than individual homeowners, but there is also a difference between say, a saguaro, and something that grows more readily.

Agave are not yucca. Tequila is made from the blue agave (agave tequilana), maguey is one of several other names for the plant: also mezcal and tequila agave. There are other agaves that can produce a similar liquors, but they cannot be called tequila (nor can any liquor not produced in specific areas of Jalasco, Mexico).

Yes. This is similar to the "regulations" relating to the name "Bourbon" when discussing whisky. It's gotta be made in Kentucky under "authorization".

Personally, I prefer "Tennessee Sour Mash Whisky"... OR "Unauthorized" North Carolina "White Liquor".

Ahhhh KUDZU -- burn it, cut it, dig it up, you name it and it will continue to grow year after year after year. It has killed trees and bushes, it just chokes everything out.

I have one yucca that has grown pretty tall since I watered it last fall. I didn't have to, and it went all summer with no water other than the rain we get. I love yuccas but my dad hates them.
I had 3 but only the one lived.

That was one of the first things I did. Rented a 4x4 tractor with a box on the back and pulled all the yucca up. I hate the stuff and it goes crazy if you let it. I like a nice clean looking pasture. Good luck. I have the occasional baby start coming up but I mow about once every 2 months during grow season and it keeps them down.

I have NEVER tried it. (Kudzu doesn't grow HERE --- although it might, if watered.) I have seen it covering most EVERYTHING in places of Western North Carolina.

I have HEARD....IF cooked "correctly", Kudzu is a VERY NUTRITIOUS plant. I also "heard" that it was originally established "Down South" as a cheap and efficient feed for Farm Animals.

I really don't know...but this is some of what I have heard over the years....

I haven't the slightest idea what it might taste like....but IF it is anything LIKE "Turnip Greens"...I ain't eatin' it !!!

Best of luck getting rid of it. Sounds like the horrors of black berry bushes in the PNW. Darned things will grow over cars in one year, and envelope whole sheds and one story buildings in just 2-3 years. You think you have it gone, then some darn bird lets one go, it lands in a crack in the sidewalk, and BAM, 3 weeks later you have a black berry bush... Never mind the snow does not kill these things and if you think you chopped it down, it just grows roots from the 6 inch sections and you all the sudden have 500 plants!!!!! You can see the vines grow daily in the summer! Their only good thing about this over your Yucca issue is that at least the black berries that escaped your killing escapade every 3 weeks will give you berries in the fall. LOL

Ugh, invasive SUCK.

We are in constant battle with Autumn Olive on our property. Hubby went through and clear cut 10 acres of it, and glyphosated every stump.

Three years later, and it looks the same as before, except now there are also stumps to trip over. Stuff suckers out like nothing else.

I found a guy with a skidder up there, going to do a trade of firewood/logging access if he will skid out the the Autumn Olives. Hateful things.

I have autumn olive, multiflora rose, japanese honeysuckle, and stiltgrass for starters. Blackberry too but it isn't that big an issue. Thankfully winters are still too cold for kudzu but it is getting a foothold near where I live. Oh yeah, garlic mustard in the area but I don't have any yet.

I WISH I could get BERRIES to grow like that here in New Mexico !!!

I'm going to look in my Gardening Catalogs and see IF there are any THORNLESS Blackberries available.
IF SO, I will order some !!!

I kin taste 'em already,

P.S. I've thought about blueberries...but the soil is very Alkaline and they need Acid soil. AND it gets a bit COLD here for most blueberries.
