RANT!!!

Henry'schickens :

Well said. I too fall in the 1st catagory. I've always been a sucker for mutts, runts and what creature is left behind. I'm in this for enjoyment not show.

showing is the most enjoying part for most people.. breeding the birds to be the best you can, taking them to the show ring matching them against 50 so birds (more or less depending on the show) of good quality and possibly beating some of the "best breeders" around.. Then knowing that it was all the time and effort you put into your "baby" and let them succeed

I know showing is for enjoyment too. I should have clarified better that I don't have the time (or knowledge yet) for showing therefore they are my pets.

Who knows, when my kids are older, I may have more time on my hands or my DD may take an interest in showing.

Im a Jeep man so no need for a Cadillac. But the people who preserve breeds so that extinction doesnt happen to the rare breeds. Also just keeping the bloodline strong for more numerous breeds is a job worth doing, and people should realize that for the time and materials used, there comes a price.

It seems this thread is somewhat about price, I am sorry if I am wrong. While I can agree with and understand the OP remarks, haggling has been a tradition for ages with livestock. Find your price and stick with it, buyers set your price and don't complain if the seller does not agree. Nothing to get bent about it is all part of the game. The same as buying a car, if you do not know how to haggle you will be upset down the line, if you find you paid to much. Or got to little.

You can always walk away too. If that don't work call the police, aggressive and inappropriate behavior is unacceptable and really has nothing to do with price. It has to do with poor manners, haggling should always be done politely.

It reminds me of a gentleman from "up north" that tried to buy one of our boats. When we could not come to terms on price he said "I can buy it up north for much less". I walked him from the show room to the front of the marina. I pointed to US1 and said "If you drive north on US1 you will eventually be up north. Good day sir our business is done." And then walked away from him.

Interesting post! I know some people love showing their birds, and good for them! I see showing chickens the same way I see dog showing. The vast majority of dog owners keep their dogs as pets. Some care if they are pure-bred, some don't. Some show their dogs and breed them, some don't. You expect to pay more for a pure-bred dog, generally.

I, of course, don't have chickens right now, but I'd probably fall into the first category. Since I'm not in the "business" I had no idea that some people have problems with prices. Hey, if you don't like it, move on. Right?
