If you are raising for show, you will not want to clip a wing. Ours would fly out, but return if they seen a feed bucket. If you hand raise the poults yourself, they will know you and follow you everywhere.

As for which variety to raise, for exhibition, only 8 varities are recognized by the American Standard of Perfection (SOP). We have a list of them on our breed club website at http://exhibitionturkeyfanciers.bravehost.com All 8 varities are considered heritage and rare varities.

A good place to acquire rare turkeys for exhibition is http://www.porterturkeys.com

The American Poultry Association currently recognizes the following varieties of Turkeys:

Black

Bourbon Red

Slate

Narragansett

White Holland

Bronze

Beltsville White

Royal Palm

The Royal Palms are one of eight varieties in the Standard of Perfection. We showed the RP this year with fair results. If you are planning on showing, steer clear of any non-Standard varieties. If all you want is pretty birds that you can eat go for the color you like. The photos all look good. If you are wanting some show birds, ask the seller if they show their birds and what wins they have had.

I to have breeding pairs or breeding trio's of the following Turkey breeds :

Black Spanish

Bourbon Red

Blue Slate / Self Blues

Narragansett

Golden Narragansetts

White Holland

Standard Bronze

Royal Palm

Chocolate

All are the same as for the houseing ,caring and feeding - all are about the same as for noise , which isn't much my Ducks can be a lot nosier then the turkeys and as for which is best or tamer well all of mine are really good , they follow me all around when it's feeding time and when I call them they come running . I have had more troubles with my Roo's then the turkeys .

I also raise from day old Gaint Whites and B B Bronze for eatting
